19 Things I've Learned At 19

I'm still working on most of them...

19 Things I've Learned At 19

1. Tell your parents you love them.

If there's one thing that we don't do enough, it's telling our parents how much we appreciate them. We forget that as we are growing up, so are they. It's nice to be reminded that they are loved. Give them a call soon.

2. There's always going to be "those days."

The days where all you want to do is lay in bed and do absolutely nothing. Know that you deserve those days. And know that it is absolutely fine to watch a season of your favorite show on Netflix with a box of chocolate. You deserve it.

3. Say what's on your mind.

People are not mind readers, so do not expect them to know what you want. If there's something you want to say, say it. Most of the time, you'll be glad that you did.

4. Be okay with not knowing.

Stop worrying about everything, and don't be so anxious. It'll only make things worse. Relax! Everything will be okay in the end, and if it's not okay, it isn't the end.

5. Leave your comfort zone.

There's a quote that reads "The comfort zone is a safe place, but nothing grows there." It's true. The more you push yourself to try new things, the more you'll learn about yourself.

6. School is important, but so are you.

Don't cram 6 hours the night before an exam. It's bad for your health, and studies have shown that not getting a sufficient amount of sleep before an exam actually does more harm than good, even if you are studying.

7. Be young.

Be naive. Your youth is a time for you to learn and to make mistakes. Experience is the best teacher.

8. Fail, and keep failing until you succeed.

Everyone wants to succeed in life, but no one wants the hardships that come along with success. Accept that there will definitely be times where life will seem like it's going against you, and just keep going.

9. Be active.

Exercise is fun, makes you feel amazing, and has many health benefits. There are so many ways to be active, you just have to find one that you like and keep doing it.

10. Make sure you choose the right people to be around.

Who your friends are reflects a lot about who you are. Surround yourself with people who impact your life positively.

11. You're allowed to cut people out of your lives.

You have absolutely no obligation to continue being friends with someone who constantly brings you down.

12. Express kindness whenever you can.

Give your last dollar to the homeless man holding a sign that says he just wants beer. Compliment the girl that glared at you. Life isn't about receiving, it's about giving. So, give.

13. Boys (or girls).

Don't waste so much of your time worrying about them. I promise you that within five months, you'll forget about any fight, breakup, or jerk.

14. Spend time alone.

You're allowed to be anti-social, it's okay. It's important that you are able to have fun by yourself because the one and only person guaranteed to be by your side for the rest of your life is you.

15. Laugh.

Just laugh, always laugh. Laughter is contagious.

16. Dream, and dream BIG.

No dream is ever too big, and if anyone tells you otherwise just don't listen. Steve Jobs once said, "The people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones who do."

17. Water.

Drink it. Drink a lot of it. We are practically made of water. Stay hydrated.

18. Learn that what others think of you has nothing to do with you.

Don't constantly live by the opinions of others, or worse, for others. It's not your job to please everyone, and you're never going to be able to, so don't waste your energy trying.

19. Love yourself.

Love you. Love being in your own skin. It's hard and it's a process, but you'll thank yourself for it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
