18 Memories From York High School

Recent York High School Alums have experienced a lot. Without going into detail, these students can think of some big events that they will never forget. Throughout high school there have been teachers that have left impacts and also memories that will never get left behind.

1. "Ya Donkeys"

I don't think anyone will forget Gally calling his students "Donkeys."

2. Rhetoric

Everyone and I mean EVERYONE complained about this class at one point or another. I know for certain though that this class helped them in college.

3. Scholarship Money

A big thank you goes out to the York community for being generous in providing money to students to help further their education. On average, a graduating class receives around $1-2 million in scholarship money.

4. State

State was always something athletes and fine arts students strived for. One Act probably made the biggest deal about it, but I mean they've won state 3 times in the past 4 years. Also, softball made it to state every year too.

5. Cheer and Dance Team rivalry

Granted it's not a big of a deal anymore; it once was years ago.

6. Open Campus

Juniors and Seniors are pretty lucky to have open campus for lunch. Upcoming seniors, the advice I give you is to have your open campus study hall first period, right before/after lunch, or eighth period.

7. Abe Lincoln's Head

Even after graduating, I'm personally still confused if the current head on the Abe Lincoln statue is the right one...

8. Homecoming

Homecoming week was probably one of the busiest weeks during the school year. Throughout chaos, long standing traditions took place. One of them being the bonfire.

9. Cal's kangaroo

Boomer (I think that was his name?) was the subject of a lot of conversations. Also, wasn't there talk of Cal buying an alligator?

10. Animal Science

Mr. Hirschfeld definitely gave the FFA and Animal Science students as many opportunities possible. Even if that meant helping a pig give birth on the same night (and time) as Honors Night.

11. The baby bunnies

Being in Animal Science had some perks. The baby bunnies were pretty dang cute and taking them around to classes got a lot of attention.

12. The turkeys

Yes, there were turkeys inside of our school, no they were not part of Animal Science.

13. The Happy Birthday Song

Joining in on Mr. Saxer singing Happy Birthday was next to impossible.

14. The perfect number is 73

That may or may not be an answer for a final, just so you know.

15. College Visits

All class college visits were honestly pretty awful, but I mean we got out of school so it was worth it.

16. Food Days

The Spanish classes probably had the most food days, however Algebra II and College Algebra had some pretty good ones, too.

17. Surprise ice cream parties

Taking MAP's testing was oddly worth it. If your class got the best scores, the teachers would throw an ice cream party and maybe let you out of school early.

18. Graduation

With the ceremony lasting less than an hour each year, it makes everyone thankful that York is a fairly small community. Though the friendships in high school may fade, the memories made will last a lifetime.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
