15 Signs You're From Portland
Portland2016

I moved to Oregon in the second grade and moved away the week before college started to head to Los Angeles. During my first week of college I had to explain that Portland was sort of like “Portlandia,” although no, I do not watch the show. Living in Portland has shaped me into the thrift-shopping, 90’s loving, coffee-obsessed woman that I am today. If you, like me are coffee enthusiasts, compost and eat Voodoo Donuts, you probably grew up in Portland.

1. The rain doesn’t faze you

The rain never bothered me anyway.

2. You can pronounce Oregon correctly

It’s not or-y-gone or or-gan, it’s or-a-gin.

3. You can also say Willamette

Say it with me: will-am-it.

4. Recycling and composting are a thing

What do you mean you only have a trash?

5. You have no idea how to pump gas

What do you mean I can’t just wait in the car?

6. You know Stumptown and Dutch Bros are the only coffee shops you need in your life

Get out of the way, Starbucks.

7. You don’t own an umbrella

Rain is just a free shower.

8. Birkenstocks are just a thing

Don't question it.

9. Nike is everything

Going to the employee store is the best day of the year.

10. You’re pale from never seeing the sun

It doesn't rain all the time, just most. And when the sun's out, we go outside.

11. You know there’s nothing to do downtown, it’s all about going to the East side

Thrift stores, record stores and the best concerts.

12. Powell's is the only place to buy books

What is Barnes & Noble?

13. You don’t understand sales tax

Why would you spend extra money on necessities?

14. You miss the old PDX carpet

RIP.

15. You listen to indie music

And go to cheap concerts.

16. Portland is your home

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
