Every year is supposed to be better than the last, but this isn't always the case. So in light of the new year approaching, I've composed a list of 16 things to look forward to in 2016.
1. Leap Year
An extra day to make your own? Heck yes.
2. Summer Olympics
This year's Summer Olympics are in Rio de Janeiro and I could not be more excited. I love seeing the amazing things these athletes can accomplish. It is a great way to bring the country together to root on the same team. USA! USA! USA!
3. Paralympics
Then later in September are the Paralympics. If you think the Summer Olympics are amazing, just watch the Paralympics. People overcoming their disabilities to accomplish amazing things will give you the motivation to do whatever is holding you back.
4. U.S. Presidential Election
This one is debatable as to whether or not it's good, depending on who you talk to, but it is nonetheless something to look forward to. When the Olympics just got finished bringing the country together, election time just pulls us right back apart. So you might want to start thinking about who you will be voting for.
5. Super Bowl 50
You've got to admit, 50 years of American football is impressive. And whether you like football or not, you have to admit that the half time show and commercials will be gold. Oh, and go Seahawks!
6. Space Hotel
A Russian Company called Orbital Technologies is going to be launching a space hotel . It may be only for the rich, but it is a step in the right direction toward civilian space travel.
7. Adele’s Tour
Where 2015 was the year of Taylor Swift, it is now Adele’s time to return to the spotlight. For those lucky enough to have scored tickets, her tour will be the music highlight of the year.
8. Marvel
In
9. DC
It’s not just Marvel that will be dominating the box office or our televisions; DC will be releasing some movies and TV shows as well. For DC TV we will be getting "Legends of Tomorrow" and most likely new seasons of "Arrow," "The Flash," "Gotham" and "Supergirl." For DC movies, "Suicide Squad" and "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice" will be hitting the big screen.
10. Movies
The only new movies we are getting are not just superhero movies; in addition, 2016 will be the year of remakes and sequels from the past. Here are just a few: "Independence Day: Resurgence," "Ghostbusters" (with a female spin), "Star Trek Beyond," "The Legend of Tarzan," "Star Wars Rogue One," "Finding Dory," "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," etc.
11. Television
There are a few things happening on the small screen in 2016. ABC Family is becoming Freeform. It's going to be weird, but it's necessary, seeing as ABC Family is not really very family friendly any longer. The "X-files," "Heroes" and "24" are both being revamped for new seasons. And finally, BBC's "Sherlock" is getting a Christmas Special, even if is the only episode we have had for a year and probably the only one we will have for another year (curse you, Steven Moffat!).
12. Harry Potter
Just when you thought Harry Potter was to remain only in our hearts, we get not one, but two Harry Potter-related releases. There will be a new Harry Potter Theme Park opening in Hollywood, so we West Coasters can get a little piece of that imaginary world we love so much. Then in November we get "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" in theaters. This spin-off film will be a good refresher for us Mudbloods—not to mention there is an Academy Award winning actor in the lead, making it that much better.
13. Netflix Original Movies
Even though Netflix's first original movie has already been released, I would still consider this part of 2016. Netflix, in addition to their amazing list of original TV shows, will now be releasing some original movies. Some of the rumored movies have to do with some big name titles, so I'm excited.
14. Canada is Unbundling Cable
Ok, so this one is a bit of a stretch for us Americans, but it is a glimpse of what may be coming for us in America in future years. The gist is that people can pick certain channels to have and pay for so that they don’t have to pay for channels they don’t want. This is a step in the cable revolution.
15. New Year’s Resolutions
Even though many resolutions go unfulfilled, some do get achieved. It just depends on your motivation and how much you care about that resolution. So lose those 10 pounds or check off things on your bucket list, because no one will tell you "you can't." Which brings me to my last point...
16. It's a blank slate
It's going to be 2016. Do what you want with it. Happy New Year!
