Recently, I did a lot of driving. Like, a lot. In one week I drove over 1,300 miles. I was in cities, on top of mountains, I drove back roads and I drove major highways while racking up some serious drivetime. At this point, I believe I'm a road trip expert. During this time in the car I found a few new songs to add to my travel playlist. This is part one of a two part series. Keep reading for numbers one through seven.
1. Ocean Drive- Duke Dumont
This is a new one I had never heard before until this week. I really like the steady beat in the background and the softer voice Duke Dumont has. It's good music to play while looking for your exit because it's not overtly in-your-face loud.
2. Sweet Nothing- Calvin Harris and Florence + the Machine
I have had a girl crush on Florence Welch since high school and I was jealous when Taylor Swift was dating Calvin Harris. So, for two of my celebrity crushes to colab on one song was insanely perfect for me. You can dance and sing along with this song to make your trip just a little more interesting.
3. Cool Girl- Tove Lo
Summer 2015 was the summer I discovered Tove Lo. I traveled to the beach quite a few times that summer and every time I went, I listened to her album, Queen of the Clouds, on repeat the entire trip. I was excited to discover her latest release, Lady Wood, was just as grunge-indebted and dreamy as the first. "Cool Girl" speaks to my inner nerd's desire to be apart of the "cool crowd" and I feel crazy cool while driving to this song.
4. Red Right Hand- Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
I think part of the reason I really like this song was because of its inclusion in the episode of X-Files where Duane Berry kidnaps Agent Scully and takes her to Skyland Mountain. If he can roadtrip to it, I can, too (just with a little less kidnapping).
5. Don't Wanna Know- Maroon 5 and Kendrick Lamar
Maroon 5 is one of those bands that everyone loves. You don't know why but you know (and love) at least one of their songs.
6. Let Me Love You- DJ Snake and Justin Bieber
The dreamy beats of DJ Snake mixed with the lyrical voice of Justin Bieber is pure bliss. The simple lyrics make it an easy song to learn and sing along to. No matter your feelings on Bieber, you'll definitely be a fan of this song.
7. Indian Outlaw- Tim McGraw
Wanna feel like a total badass driving down the road? This is the song to play. This song is rock-n-roll meets country meets native culture and, while it was controversial at the time for its perceived cultural appropriation, it's still a great song with with an interesting mix of tom toms and a fiddle.
This concludes part one.
