If your Valentine's Day is dubbed as Single's Awareness Day like mine is, you're probably lamenting the idea of sitting at home on dreadful February 14 with copious amounts of chocolate and sappy romance movies. So, how about we not do that? Here's a list of 14 things you can do on Valentine's Day instead!
1. Go to the gym.
Exercise is great for releasing endorphins and boosting your mood, so if you're feeling sad, find your favorite Spotify station and hit the gym!
2. Plan a party.
Don't spend Valentine's Day alone; host a get-together with all your other single friends to make the most out of the day.
3. Treat yo self!
I'm a health enthusiast, but I think you can afford to indulge your sweet tooth for a day. Come on, you know that piece of cheesecake or that chocolate brownie is worth it!
4. Do something for yourself.
We spend so much time thinking about other people, so do something that benefits you, whether that's organizing your room or catching up on a good book.
5. Visit your local animal shelter or Petsmart.
I know what always makes me feel better: spending time with animals. You may not have the love of another person at the moment, but all you have to do for an animal to love you is pet its head and show it you care!
6. Find new music.
It's quite tempting to turn on Adele on Valentine's Day, but don't. Find your favorite artist on Spotify or Pandora and surf through the related artists. There may be some hidden gems you haven't uncovered yet.
7. Call your mom or dad.
Parents appreciate phone calls any day, but if they know that you're thinking of them on this special day of love, I know it will mean a lot to them.
8. Go shopping.
There's nothing like good old-fashioned retail therapy, but even if you don't have money to spend, seeing something in store that catches your eye may motivate you to save up and buy it soon.
9. Make a craft.
If you aren't "artistically talented," it doesn't matter because you're expressing yourself and your ideas. So, pull out a canvas or a coloring book and express what you feel.
10. Go for a drive.
Sometimes, the open road puts things into perspective, and driving or riding with a friend can give you a mental break that you're probably craving.
11. Give yourself a makeover.
It doesn't matter if you don't have somewhere to go; you should get dressed up to feel good about yourself. Wear something nice for class or work that day, and I guarantee that you'll walk a little taller.
12. Watch something funny on TV or Netflix.
If you're content to lay low for the night, find something funny to watch instead! I highly recommend "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" and "Haters Back Off" if you haven't seen them!
13. Try some new food.
No matter if you're in the mood for sweet or savory, the way to anyone's heart is through their stomach! Test out a new dish in your kitchen, or go and order that entree that tempts you from your usual dining fare.
14. Smile.
It seems like the most menial thing in the world to do, but smiling will help pull you out of the slump you may be in. It doesn't matter about what; just smile.
It may seem like it sucks to be single on Valentine's Day, but there are ways to make the most out of the situation. It's all a matter of perspective. So, put your perspective on love, and start by loving yourself.
