14 Reasons To Love Starkville, Mississippi

Starkville, Mississippi. The town you hear so many people complain about because "the only time there is anything to do is during football season." Starkville is home to so many great things and great people. To know it is to love it and here is why.

1. Bin 612 cheese fries.

No words could ever describe the way they make you feel.

2. Mississippi State University.

I've met people who attend other universities and I have heard them complain about the faculty and the people and every time I become more and more grateful for the school I attend. I have yet to come across a professor who will not work with you. It is this simple: people here care.

3. Home away from home.

This town and the people make you feel so comfortable and real. You are able to be yourself and grow into who you want to be. People may complain about "how there is never anything to do," but I have yet to meet someone who has not fallen in love with Starkville, MS.

4. Baseball.

No one cares if you don't like baseball... you will after one game.

5. More cowbell.

It isn't annoying, I promise.

6. The grass.

Seriously, it is February and the grass is healthier than I have ever been in my entire life.

7. How much the counseling center is talked about and used.

This just says something about the people in Starkville and at Mississippi State. People are never ashamed to go to get help or talk about our counseling center.

8. Local places.

All of the stores and restaurants really are "home-grown" and there is nothing more special to someone who lives in Starkville than those places that were grown there.

9. Stromboli's cookie dough bites.

My mouth is watering just thinking about them. How could you love anything more???

10. Strangebrew.

Those little chocolate covered espresso beans are just the greatest.

11. The Refuge.

I'll probably get engaged there.

12. The Egg Bowl Trophy.

Sorry, not actually sorry at all. Ole Miss you really thought, good game though. #55-20

13. You find your place.

You come to college thinking it will be a while before you find your people and where you fit it. At some schools that is the case, but not at State. You have an entire week to participate in activities JUST to get plugged in, your email is constantly blowing up with things happening around campus, and how can one forget walking through the Drill Field. The only way to not find your place here is if you ignore every chance that is given to you for you to make this place home.

14. The people.

Nothing compares to the people in Starkville, Mississippi. It doesn't matter where you are from or who your parents are when you come to Starkville you are loved for who you are and who you will become.

There is just something about Starkville that makes it stand out from all the other places in Mississippi. There is something about the people and the places here that makes it unlike any other city.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
