There's something incredibly freeing about being someone else for a day– it's a chance to let yourself go, to become someone stronger, more confident, more interesting. And there's no other day of the year that you can do that other than Halloween.
However, it's easy to find yourself in a Halloween rut-- just wearing the same type of costume or whatever is hiding in your closet. And where's the fun in being a vampire ten years in a row?
Not to mention the fact that many Halloween costumes for women are overly sexual, to the point where it borders on ridiculous (I actually saw a sexy Harambe costume online. No, that is not a joke).
Besides, isn't Halloween about being scary?
So here are thirteen eerie, cool ladies to be this Halloween.
1. Wednesday Addams from "The Addams Family"
There's no doubt the entire Addams Family is goth family goals and Wednesday may just be the darkest and most morbid of them all.
2. Mrs. Lovett from "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street"
There are few women like Mrs. Lovett. Sweeney Todd's cheerful, clever accomplice, she's one of the most eerie and fascinating characters in theater and film.
3. Elvira
If you want a sexy costume that's unique and cool, Elvira is the way to go. The Mistress of the Dark is a Halloween icon.
4. Nancy Downs from "The Craft"
The troubled, goth leader of a coven of teenage witches, Nancy provides an easy and fun costume. Who doesn't like to be a bad girl every once in a while?
5. Lydia Deetz from "Beetlejuice"
Seeing as how she inspired legions of girls in the late '80s and '90s to go goth, Lydia Deetz definitely deserves a place of honor on this list.
6. The Twins from "The Shining"
If you and your best friend want to do a group costume with an eerie vibe, then the Twins are the way to go. There's no creepier duo in film.
7. Bellatrix LeStrange from "Harry Potter"
There's no witch we love to hate more than Bellatrix, and sometimes it's fun to be bad.
8. Carrie White from "Carrie"
Poor, poor Carrie. I doubt being doused in pigs' blood is very fun, but it sure makes for a good costume.
9. Audrey Horne from "Twin Peaks"
I'm going to be honest and admit my bias straight up: Audrey Horne is my favorite. "Twin Peaks" is my favorite TV show, and she is my favorite character. She's got an eerie sort of sensuality about her that makes her terribly fascinating, plus her outfit isn't a hard one to recreate.
10. Morticia Addams from "The Addams Family"
Like her daughter, Morticia is goth girl goals, and she's got a healthy dose of Elvira's sex appeal to boot.
11. Laura Palmer from "Twin Peaks"
The cool thing about Laura is that other than being Twin Peaks' troubled and eerie prom queen, there's a multitude of looks you can channel from her. You can do the iconic red room scene as pictured above, her prom queen outfit, or wrap yourself in plastic for her ultimate fate. (Although, you should wear something under the plastic. Obviously...)
12. Magenta from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show"
Magenta and her brother Riff Raff are quite possibly the weirdest twins on the planet and she's got the right eerie air about her mixed with the sexiness of a maid outfit.
13. Sally from "The Nightmare Before Christmas"
Sally mixes sweetness and creepiness flawlessly, for those who want to be scary but not necessarily bad.
