Little Things

Sick. Tired. Sounding like a dying, chain smoking cat. This has been my life for the past week (and two weeks ago… I guess I’m destined to be perpetually sick) and this becomes everyone’s life at some point. While being sick sucks, here are some enjoyable pick-me-ups for the healthily-challenged.

1. Netflix

You can't really do much, but you can always lay down and watch other people do things! Catch your flicks and live through them as you lay down in the comfort of your bed.

2. Tons of tea

Coffee doesn't always feel great on the throat, but tea does. It'll still wake you up (or put you to sleep) and it is very soothing. For me, tea is a go-to whenever I'm feeling out of it. Just add a little honey, and you're set! Speaking of honey...

3. Honey, honey, honey

If you have a throat sickness, going for honey will put you right on the money. Like tea, it's soothing for the throat, and combined, the two make a wonderful, enchanting concoction.

4. Soup for the soul

Usually, people don't feel like eating three-course meals or anything heavy when they're feeling under the weather. Soup is light, warm, and comforting. Not to mention there's instant soup for the aching soul lacking the desire to open a can.

5. Sleep

Sleep never is a bad thing, especially when you're sick. The more sleep you get, the more your body will rest, and the faster you'll get back to normal.

6. Good tunes

Add a happy note to your day by playing your favorite jams. Maybe go for the chill, laid back songs while sipping your tea, and you'll hopefully feel relaxed and rejuvenated.

7. Cats and dogs

Furry friends make life better (unless you're allergic). Having a companion to lay by your side when you're down in the dumps will make being ill just a little more bearable.

8. Nooks of books

Avid reader? Now's the time to bust out the books! You can't do much else, especially if you need to stay in bed. Reading (like Netflix) will let your mind explore what your body can't.

9. Lots of love

Friends make everything better. You may feel a little lonely, but if you can get the hook-up for some chicken soup or Starbucks from your trusty squad, you'll be feeling good feels.

10. A bounty of blankets

Bundle up! You're probably either cold, sleepy, or uncomfortable. Grab your stash of blankets and prepare for hibernation.

11. A steamy shower

If your mind went to the gutter, save the risque thoughts for a later date! In this case, a hot shower will cure your aches and pains, clear your sinuses, and leave you feeling refreshed. Shower the day away!

12. Sacks of sweets

Fact: Junk food and sugar make us happy. When you're sick, you can use all the happiness you can get. Save the dieting for when you're healthy and up for a jog, and treat yourself to a slice of cake or a handful of candy.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
