We all have days where we feel like crap. Crap is inevitable. However, when facing such adversity, self-care is extremely important. It’s easy to get caught up in the angst of life and keep in sight what’s ultimately important: you. Without no self-care, you will not pass that test; you cannot effectively work on your relationship; you cannot tackle society as a hallow shell that’s waiting to crack.
Admitting that you have a problem and reaching out for help can be a very difficult thing to do. But, there are ways to do so safely and healthily. Therefore, without further ado, here are twelve things to remember when the world seems to be doing nothing but working against you:
1. You've gotten through adversity before, and you can do it again.
Remember that one embarrassing thing you did six years ago and it still haunts you today? Yeah, that happened. But, you also got through it. It’s important to remember that everything is relative; and, regardless of circumstances, this too shall pass.
2. School is hard. Studying is hard. Relationships are hard. Take a moment to breathe everyday and appreciate the not-so-complicated things in life.
Take a minute to embrace your surroundings. Notice the weather; notice the animals; notice the day, and notice the night. There may be surprises in your area that you never took time to notice before. Each and every of these aspects continue to exist and keep marching on: just like you can.
3. Yes, some may have it worse than I do, AND my feelings are real and valid.
You might hear this from your parents, teachers, or superiors in general, but, honestly, this is some of the worst advice to possibly give someone while they’re down. Yes, you should remain grateful for the good in your life; however, that doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to feel pain. Pain and suffering in life is inevitable yet variable. It looks different for everybody at any given time.
4. You are surrounded by beauty.
He who created the earth truly had a miraculous vision while doing so.
5. You are beautiful.
This one sounds cheesy, but it’s true. Individuality is beautiful. Whether or not you view yourself as “average”, factually, that’s just not the case. We could get into the biology behind the exclusivity of your DNA; however, it’s easier to remember gist, which is that there’s no one else in the world that can be you. That’s pretty damn cool to think about.
6. Take a minute to reflect and cut negative energy out of your life.
That girl on Instagram that you think is annoying? Unfollow her. Is following world news fairly depressing? I’d say so. You might not be able to avoid it forever, but you can put your phone away for the day. Don’t check Twitter, stay off of Buzzfeed, and keep away from the nightly news. We always deserve a little cleanse of the mind every now and then.
7. Take a minute to reflect and find a way to incorporate more positivity in your life.
Take up a new hobby. Do something you’ve never done before. Read a good book. Re-watch your favorite movie. Eat your favorite ice cream without worrying about calories for once. Again, we all deserve a little cleanse of the mind every now and then.
8. Chances are, somebody out there is going through a similar situation to yours right now.
People have faced similar challenges, and they have overcome it. You can too. It won’t be easy, but it’s always nice to know that you’re not alone facing adversity. This is also an important thing to remember if you intend to partake in a support group near you.
9. If you rely on others to be happy, you'll never reach your full potential.
This one cannot be stressed enough. It’s so simple, yet so hard to abide by. The logic behind why we consistently fall into this trap will never make sense; so, don’t beat yourself up over if you find yourself in this type of situation. Trust who you are and what you believe in. You are a lot more resilient than you give yourself credit for.
10. You are not alone. You never will be alone.
Period. No questions asked.
11. Don't try to be anyone else.
You are the best in the world at being you.
12. Have faith.
Whether you believe in God, evolution, nature, or some other greater form, have faith in something. If “greater beings” aren’t your thing, that’s fine. But, regardless, do yourself one favor: Have faith in yourself.
