I speak from experience when I say that being tall isn't easy. I have been 5 feet 11 inches since I was 15 years old, so it goes without saying that I tower above most of my friends and family members. There are several advantages to being taller than average; however, I find these advantages are easily forgotten during the awkward and frustrating moments of life.
Here are some of the struggles we tall girls deal with on a daily basis.
1. Constantly hitting your head on ceiling fans and low-hanging light fixtures.
It's not unusual to feel a bit like Gandalf in a hobbit hole.
2. The unfortunate shortage of boys who are taller than six feet.
Needless to say, blind dates are out of the question.
3. The nearly impossible task of finding jeans that reach your ankles.
I can't be the only one who spends hours at the mall, desperately trying to find a store that carries extra-long pants.
4. Having to stand in the back for group photos.
Would I look shorter if I slouched?
5. Awkward hugs with short friends.
I'm not trying to strangle you, I promise.
6. Random people who comment on your height in public.
The weather is fine up here. Thanks for asking.
7. The never-ending questions about your athletic abilities.
"Do you play basketball? How about volleyball?"
8. Being stuck in the backseat during long car trips.
Curse these genetically long legs.
9. Dresses that would fit an average-sized person instantly turn into T-shirts on you.
This dress definitely looked longer on the mannequin.
10. People who have the audacity to tell you that you're too tall to wear heels.
Just...no.
11. When you can see over the top of the bathroom stall.
Nothing like making eye contact with strangers while using the restroom.
12. Not being able to cross your legs under your desk at school.
Seriously, does this thing come in a larger size?
Only recently have I come to embrace my height for what it is: a unique asset and something to be proud of. I can only hope that all the other statuesque ladies who are struggling with self-image will come to this realization as well.
Stand tall, my lovelies! And don't be afraid to wear those heels!
