12 Pro-Tips For Fest Season At Ohio University

Are you an incoming freshman worried about how to have fun without being arrested this fest season? Do you go to another college and are visiting an Ohio University student for the first time this fest season? I've come up with a few pro-tips that can save your life and keep you out of jail!

1. NEVER Carry Open Containers On The Sidewalk

This is the leading cause of arrests during fest. STAY ON THE GRASS! If you keep your open containers on the grass or on the porch of a house, you don't have much to worry about. Keep in mind, if you are not 21 you are at risk, so try to follow these tips to a tee.

2. Always Stay With Your Group OR Know Where Everyone Is At All Times

Keeping up with your group can somewhat be difficult considering all the drunkards running around. Make sure if someone has to go to the bathroom that EVERYONE goes, or split up into smaller groups. NEVER should you be alone during a fest. It's just really unsafe, and you could find yourself in trouble. Going along with this, make sure you and your group all have contact information for each other and make sure your guests know where you live. If they go up and ask someone, "Hey, do you know where that brick building is? My friend lives there," that could definitely be confusing.

3. Drink SO MUCH Water

Every single time you have the opportunity, drink water. You have to keep your body hydrated for an all-day drinking war with your friends. To get ahead of the game, drink water. You'll outlast all your friends. Promise.

4. BEWARE Of The Jungle Juice

Honestly, it all comes down to this. You do not know what they put in there, so make sure if you are going to drink it that you are aware of who made it and that you trust them. If you aren't 100 percent sure, just don't drink it. Kegs are safe though (if drunken responsibly).

5. If A Party Gets Raided, Stay Calm And Don't Fraternize With Officers

Key tip to not getting arrested. If you freak out, that is going to be the first sign that you are underage. If a party gets raided, typically they just move everyone out. Staying calm is key.

6. Make Sure To Sleep Well The Night Before

Major key alert! If you're super tired the day of fest, chances are you'll be clocking out early. Make sure to sleep well the night before so you can stay out with your friends all day long.

7. Always Ask To Pet Horses First

This is definitely an easy way to get arrested. I never knew this as a freshman, but I found out VERY quickly. You would never even think of this if it is your first fest. Beware of petting horses! Usually the officers will let you if you just simply ask.

8. Don't Bring Your Pets To Fest

You don't want your animals being abused, and that is exactly what is at risk if you bring your pet to fest. They deserve much better than that. You wouldn't want a bunch of drunk idiots petting you, right?

9. NEVER Show A Cop Your Fake ID

If a cop asks you for identification, just give them your real ID. I know, you might be tempted, but you might just have to take the L on this one.

10. Don't Go Jumping Off Of Rooftops

Yet another easy way to get arrested this fest season. Not only will you be arrested, but you'll most likely get that party shut down, and nobody wants that.

11. Know Your Rights

Lastly, the most important tip I can give you: know your rights. Most people who get called up by cops just walk up to them and start admitting everything. You don't have to do that! If they ask you a question, answer it truthfully and don't lie, but also, know your rights so you don't get caught up in it all.

12. Have Fun And Be Safe!

Have fun no matter what. Fest season is about having a good time with your friends and enjoying life, so live it up! Just don't forget to follow these tips. Keep Calm and Party On!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
