2016 feels like a new start; a chance for everyone to make changes in their lifestyles and attitudes. Everyone makes resolutions, such as to lose weight or save money, but these goals are all too often left unmet by the time the next year rolls around. So, for this year, I challenge you to make a new resolution: get out and do something new. As humans, we frequently get caught up in our routines and forget to wake up and smell the roses (figuratively and literally). Minnesota is filled with awesome landscapes and entertainment, perfect for keeping your adventures eclectic and fulfilling. If you can set aside one day or long weekend a month to do something new with some friends or loved ones, here is a month-to-month itinerary of places to go in Minnesota in 2016.
1. January: The Ice Castles in Eden Prairie
The Ice Castles in Eden Prairie, Minnesota are made by this company called Ice Castles (weird, right?) that is based out of Utah. They are various — you guessed it — structures made out of ice. The view is pretty awesome, but if that’s not enough, there are also various activities, such as fire performances, Frozen character meet-and-greets, and star gazing tours. Visiting the Ice Castles is a great way to get some fresh air and see some unique and breathtaking art forms that would surely satisfy your wanderlust … at least for the rest of the month.
2. February: Red Bull Crashed Ice in St. Paul
The Red Bull Crashed Ice Championship is happening in St. Paul, Minnesota on February 26th and 27th. For those who do not know, Red Bull Crashed Ice is a set of various downhill ice skating races, and is advertised as the fastest sport in the world. The skaters try to skate their way to victory through sharp turns and steep drops. This is the first year the finale has ever been held in St. Paul, so this is definitely something you will want to see in 2016.
3. March: Great Lakes Aquarium in Duluth
March is that month where everyone expects spring to start but it rarely does. So, in order to keep you out of the depressing cold, but still keep you hopeful of the warmth to come, visit the Great Lakes Aquarium in Duluth, Minnesota this March. The aquarium has tons of freshwater and marine animals to look at — and some to even interact with. There are over 30 interactive exhibits highlighting animals and the environment. The Great Lakes Aquarium is a great place to visit with friends to switch up your normal routine for the month.
4. April: Glensheen Historic Estate in Duluth
Glensheen Estate is this historic and massive mansion in Duluth, Minnesota. The mansion has 39 rooms, as well as large grounds filled with gardens, a tennis court, a carriage house (with carriages) and much more. There are various tours you can take of this massive estate, including a flashlight tour, which highlights the servant-life in the mansion, and is rumored to be a little spooky. Visiting the Glensheen Mansion is a fun and unique day-trip to take with your friends or family, and since some of the views are outside, April is the perfect month to visit.
5. May: Gooseberry Falls State Park in Two Harbors
Gooseberry Falls is an awesome State Park with various attractions, most pointedly — based on the name — the waterfalls. With May comes green, sunshine, and warm airs, perfect for some hiking, biking, or camping (especially over Memorial Day Weekend). Gooseberry Falls State Park is a great place to go with friends to get that much needed fresh air everyone has been lusting after since November. If you even remotely like nature, visiting Gooseberry Falls State Park is a must-do this year.
6. June: Canterbury Downs Race Track in Shakopee
Canterbury Downs is a horse-racing track and 24-hour casino that is a great day trip, even if you aren’t a “horse person.” There are horse races every weekend all summer, and there are also special races on certain weekends, where other animals, such as zebras and ostriches race, too, and — of course — you can bet on your favorite animals. Canterbury is a great place to go with some friends, dress in your fancy hat and maxi dress, and maybe even make a few bucks.
7. July: Camping on Rum River in Isanti
July is when summer really starts heating up in Minnesota, so what sounds better than cooling off in the water? Rum River is in Isanti, Minnesota, and is well known for lazy river tubing. Spend a long weekend at Country Camping — a tent and RV campsite on the Rum River — with friends or family and float down the river to cool off.
8. August: Minnesota State Fair in St. Paul
What is more important in August in Minnesota than the State Fair? The answer is nothing. “The Great Minnesota Get Together” runs from the end of August through Labor Day Weekend, and features some awesome rides, animals, performers, and food on a stick. This August, the State Fair is most certainly a must-do.
9. September: Renaissance Festival in Shakopee
If you think you are too cool to hang out with people dressed in armor or princess dresses and eat turkey legs, you are probably wrong. The Renaissance Festival offers tons of awesome activities anyone would love, such as shopping, jousting, comedy shows, games, food, and even elephant rides. The Ren Fest is an awesome day trip to take this fall that will bring out your inner “Game of Thrones” persona.
10. October: Dead End Hayride in Wyoming
Let’s face it: October practically bleeds orange and black. If there’s one thing on everyone’s minds during October, it is most certainly Halloween. So, this October, what better to do on your monthly adventure than go on a haunted hayride? Dead End Hayride in Wyoming, Minnesota is an hour of screaming and jumping through a hayride and multiple haunted houses that will definitely scare you into the Halloween spirit.
11. November: The Venetian Indoor Waterpark in Maple Grove
November is that time of year where everyone really starts missing the warm weather of summer, so why not spend a weekend swimming and playing? The Venetian Indoor Waterpark is in the Holiday Inn in Maple Grove, Minnesota, and has four story water slides, basketball, an arcade, and much more. Get a group of friends together and splurge on a hotel room to spend the weekend embracing your inner-child and pretending there isn’t snow on the ground.
12. December: Bentleyville “Tour of Lights” in Duluth
Bentleyville is a free walk through a display of lights right on Lake Superior. The sights are spectacular and will really get you in the Christmas spirit this year. Plus, there are many other events, such as free hot chocolate and roasted marshmallows, and meet-and-greets with Santa and Rudolph. Bentleyville is the perfect place to go with friends or family in December 2016.
