The beach is a popular place to spend summer vacation. Many can walk to the beach or opt to drive thousands of miles to get there, but there’s always that one day it is constantly raining and no way to enjoy the beach.
But just because the beach is gloomy doesn't mean you can't make the most of your vacation. Here are my favorite indoor activities when it’s bad outside:
First, accept the rain and have an appreciation for it. This is something all beach goers forget and just think negative thoughts. According to Luke Bryan, “Rain is a Good Thing” for many reasons…
Movies are a go-to plan. Watching movies is such an easy way to make time go by faster. On my recent bad beach day, we went to RedBox at least three times. You can watch your all-time favorite movies with a nice thunderstorm enhancing the background noise.
Board games can bring out the real family competition. Sadly, for this trip, we forgot our games, but for previous trips, many funny stories came out of board game competitions. It is an activity I always look forward to for any rainy days.
Ask the locals what their favorite rainy day activities are. Tourists only know what to do based on pamphlets and Internet searches. The locals have lived in your vacation area for years and know the fun places to try during those not so sunshiny days. It doesn’t hurt talking to others and you may make a friend out of it!
You cannot go wrong with cat naps. It’s not physically possible to be on the beach for hours or even days and not take a nap. Take this opportunity to catch up on some ZZZ’s. Your body will thank you when you have to swim against the current again.
Catch up on a good book. I finally finished Gone Girl…which took me literally two years to read. When you’re a college student, squeezing in that extra time to read a good book is difficult. Any rainy day, especially on vacation, is great coffee and book time.
Whip out those Pinterest ideas to pass the time. You eventually have to eat or have time to do something crafty, so why not finally try that Pinterest idea? This would be the perfect day to accomplish many crafts or -- more likely -- many more fails. Before you start, don’t do the glitter bowl by using a balloon. Trust me, it's not worth attempting...
If you don’t wait fails, go to a professional crafting place. Many cities have fun places to paint or make cool items. My personal favorite is Painting With a Twist, or if you’re in the Corpus Christi area check out Fire Up! Ceramics. You get to walk away with personal art and memories.
Drive around and discover more of the city you drove over a thousand miles to get to. Even the biggest beach bums don't want to be stuck in their beach house all day -- seize an adventure while you can. This is a good break from the beach and the best way to find what other activities to do.
Brush up on your history and visit a museum! It doesn’t hurt to get a little bit of education on vacation. Museums can be just as entertaining as anywhere else; take this opportunity to learn and see all the things you read in textbooks.
Lastly, and what I am doing during my rainy vacation, write a blog post. This is a time-consuming activity that can be both enjoyable and relaxing. Writing is an easy way to express yourself or simply share your humble thoughts, and sites like Odyssey make it easy to share those opinions with the world.
It's still early in the afternoon, and I have already done every single one of these activities. Hopefully, more ideas can come to mind, but for now, I will continue to explore Pinterest and take another nap.
