As far as campus jobs go, some are better than others. Arguably one of the best jobs on campus, at least at OU, is being a Learning Community Leader, or LCL. Learning Communities are groups of first-year students who are enrolled in a University College class that helps them transition to college during their first semester. LCL's take their students to out of class activities and serve as a mentor. The job has its highs and lows, and there are definitely some things that all LCL's know too well.

1. If you bring free food to an event, students are about 73 percent more likely to come.

"There will be candy" is the subject line for half of your emails to your students.

2. Trying to get your students to come to the required alcohol education event is almost impossible.

You are not above begging, pleading, or bribing them to participate.

3. There are always those two or three students that come to everything and save your attendance rate.

Whether it's a football game, arts event, or study session, these few stars students are bound to show up.

4. Seeing your students at the same party you're attending is probably one of the most awkward situations ever.

Do you hide? Do you say hi? Do you leave? Help.

5. Conversations with your students take you back to your freshman year and make you feel absolutely ancient.

"When I was a freshman..." is common in your conversations with your students. Then you start to think about all the things that have changed since your freshman year, and that the LCL from your freshman year has already graduated, and that you will be graduating soon, and that you might as well be 80 years old.

6. There are students that you still have not seen at a single one of your events.

You know it's bad when you still have to ask some students their names during week eight.

7. You get more excited about the events you plan than your students.

You explain that the Halloween party you are throwing for your students will have pumpkins, "Hocus Pocus," games, those little mummy hot dogs, crafts, and "The Monster Mash"...but your students just want to know if they get extra credit for goingSigh

8. You simultaneously feel like your student's friend and parent.

You always remind them to "Have a safe weekend!" as they are leaving class.

9. You try not to take it personally when no one comes to your events.

You find yourself irrationally thinking that the reason your students didn't show up is because they obviously hate you. FYI: not true.

10. Realizing that you get paid to spend time doing fun stuff with your students makes you really happy.

You got paid to take your students to the School of Theater play as an arts event. That's right, you got paid to see a play.

11. When you see your students succeed, you know you've got the best job on campus.

At the end of the semester, you can look back proudly knowing that you helped give your students the tools to be successful in school.
