To Greek Or Not To Greek?

11 Signs that Greek Life is the Right Move for You

To Greek Or Not To Greek?

Across the nation, Greek life is extremely popular; however, it's simply not for everybody. Whatever the reason may be, many people stay away from sororities and fraternities. As a member of an amazing sorority, I can confidently say that those who do not participate are definitely missing out on a wonderful experience. If you or somebody you know is considering joining a Greek organization, consider the following signs to determine whether or not Greek life is right for you.

1. You like making new friends

When you join a Greek organization, you are going to make a ton of new friends. If your attitude is similar to Drake's and you don't want any new friends, Greek life isn't for you. Becoming a member of a sorority or fraternity will bring you amazing friendships; your organization will be filled with people just like you and some that are vastly different. Basically, if you want to meet a ton of great new people both in and out of your organization, you should definitely rush.

2. You like having fun

Greek life is super fun, there is no doubt about that. If formals, socials, and retreats don't appeal to you, maybe join the debate team. From spending time just hanging out with other members to big chapter-planned events, Greek life is all about bringing its members together and having a good time. While it's not all fun and games, it sure is a blast when it is.

3. You like helping out around the community

A big part of joining a Greek organization is philanthropy and community involvement. This means making donations to local organizations, volunteering locally, and even cleaning up the town. Members of sororities and fraternities are expected to be active and helpful members of their communities, as well. Greek organizations work hard to support both local and national philanthropies, so if you wish to make an impact in your community and even the world, consider going Greek.

4. You want to participate in awesome events on campus

Joining a Greek organization means involvement on campus; the two go hand-in-hand. If being involved isn't your style, Greek life probably isn't either. Sororities and fraternities have reputations to uphold, and they all want to be known as being involved. Like most things in Greek life, some events are mandatory and others are not; however, involvement is a definite requirement. The truth is when all the Greek organizations get together on campus, it's always a good time; you don't want to miss out on that.

5. You live for t-shirts

Comfort Colors, American Apparel, Gildan -- us Greek life members know these brand names all too well. Greek organizations are notorious for going t-shirt crazy, tending to create a t-shirt design for just about any occasion. Although there will inevitably be a ton of shirts available to order, they aren't all required purchases; however, take it from a sorority girl, you'll probably want them all.

6. You like getting dressed up

Whether it's a themed social or a formal, getting dressed up for Greek life events is always exciting. Getting gussied up in your best black-tie affair outfit is just as fun as putting on an oversized white button up, men's boxers, and sunglasses to mirror Tom Cruise in "Risky Business." If having a good time in crazy costumes is your thing, maybe Greek life is for you.

7. You want to form lifelong bonds

Like I said before, Greek life is all about making new friends and connections. Because I joined a sorority, I found my future bridesmaids. Not all the people you meet in your organization will be friends for life, but chances are, you will make some of the most meaningful and lasting friendships. Going Greek can help you find your person; who does't want that?

8. You want to achieve personal growth

Speaking from personal experience, going Greek has made me a better version of myself. I am expected to hold myself to a high set of standards, and in turn, that has reflected in my life outside of my Greek organization. Personal growth is inevitable when you surround yourself with a diverse group of people; becoming a member of a sorority or fraternity can change you in the most positive of ways. Being a part of a Greek organization allows for a lot of opportunities for self-improvement and achievement.

9. You play well with others

Getting along and working well with others is something fundamental we are all (most of us, anyway) taught at a young age. These skills are important in life, especially when in a group or organization. Greek life requires the same amount of cooperation and teamwork as a business; members have their roles and are expected to adapt to, accept, and work with the varying styles and behaviors of other members. Membership in a sorority or fraternity is definitely for somebody who knows how to play well with others.

10. You care about future opportunities

Becoming Greek affiliated can be extremely beneficial; one of the greatest benefits that comes from joining a greek organization is networking. The connections you make within your organization can help you later on in life in instances such as searching for a job. Greek life is a great way to gain many valuable life skills, such as teamwork, leadership, responsibility, and countless others.

11. You like having a (diverse) support system

Whether you need somebody to vent to or somebody to help you study, there's always somebody willing to help. Being in a Greek organization gives you access to many different points of view and expertise. Your Greek brothers or sisters will always be around to support you, help guide you, and encourage you. At your worst or at your best, you will always have people there for you; Greek affiliation is for life, not just four years.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
