You can't live with it, you can't live with out it. For those of you lucky enough to be from North Salem here are a few things that its residents might have in common.
1. You know what it is like to have more horses than people living in town.

2. You probably know everything about everyone.
Living in a small town like North Salem, news travels fast. Like crazy fast. Knowing far too much about the person who sat behind you in English class. Or that guy who works in the deli. Or who takes the train out of Purdy’s compared to Croton Falls.
3. You have probably seen David Letterman running along the Titicus Reservoir.
The first time I saw him running by my house I almost didn't recognize him. You also probably have a confident relative like my uncle who stopped him to ask for directions.
4. You are familiar with the balanced rock.
No one knows how this massive glacial erratic was formed, but if you haven't seen it you probably couldn't say you were from North Salem.
5. You understand the struggle of grocery shopping in a different state.
We may live five minutes from the Connecticut border, but New York and Connecticut are two different places.
6. And you understand the struggle of not being able to walk anywhere.
Our rural town makes it almost impossible to do anything if you don't have the ability to drive. Houses are spread out and restaurants and shops are a good 20-minute drive to get to.
7. You were so excited when Hayfields opened.
Finally there was place to get a good cup of coffee and hang out with friends after school. And the turkey avocado sandwich isn't too bad either!
8. You probably went tubing on Peach Lake.
It is called a lake, but its the size of a glorified pond. You definitely made the most of those late summer nights on the "lake."
9. You either worked or went to Mountain Lakes Camp.
Mountain Lakes camp was what some young kids would spend their school year looking forward to and what some older kids would spend their year dreading.
10. You know what The Hunt is.
Sometimes you could even see members from the hunt right in your backyard.
11. You grew to love the strength and integrity of this small town.
There may not be a lot of things to do in the small and quiet town of North Salem, but the supportive community around you always was there for you in times of need.
