As a cross country runner, I usually get asked on a daily basis how I continue to force myself to do what I do. People find it crazy that I could actually enjoy wearing myself down mile after mile. The reality is, however, that running has changed my life in so many ways. Whether you're a collegiate athlete or it's just a pastime, running has a overwhelming amount of positive effects.
1. It's easy to track your progress.
One awesome thing about running is that it's not hard to see small improvements, especially if you're using a GPS watch. And I can almost guarantee that if you're running consistently, you will see improvements. It's pretty exciting to beat your personal 5K record or finally run a mile in the time you'd been working toward.
2. Running allows you to explore so many different places.
Switching up where you run can allow you to see some pretty awesome scenery (and it may even distract you from how tired you are). Some of my favorite runs have been on a new trail or path. Check out some local parks and see if they offer any good places to run!
3. It's good for your physical health...obviously.
The health benefits of running go on and on. It can raise levels of good cholesterol, increase lung function and use, reduce risk of blood clots, boost your immune system, prevent disease, etc. And let's not forget that awesome runner's bod.
4. Going on a run can help your mental health as well.
Countless studies have found that running makes you an all-around happier person. As we all know, when someone exercises, the brain secretes hormones that naturally improve your mood. Running can help reduce depression and relieve stress. It's hard not to feel better about yourself after a run, even if it's just for 10 minutes!
5. Running can lead to friendships.
I firmly believe that there is no stronger bond than the bond between running buddies. Your running partner has truly seen it all. Going on a long, slower-paced run is the perfect time to catch up, gossip, or just be present with people. Besides, it's nice to have someone to suffer right along with you.
6. It can also provide some much-needed "me" time.
In the mood to be alone? Running definitely does not have to be a group activity. Sometimes all you really need is some time alone with your thoughts, and what better way to do so than going for a run.
7. It's the perfect excuse to eat more.
Even though I've been running every day for months, I still use it as an excuse to eat that extra piece of chocolate cake. You burn a lot of calories when you run, so you might as well reward yourself (in moderation, of course).
8. It's also the perfect excuse to treat yourself to some new clothes.
Although runners usually look like worn-out, sweaty, smelly messes, it's always nice to be sporting a cute new outfit when you hit the trail. If you've been eyeing a pair leggings recently, you might as well buy them. You deserve it after all of your hard work!
9. There's nothing quite like the feeling of a runner's high.
In my opinion, this can sometimes go beyond any scientific explanation. A runner's high is hard to explain, but I would describe it as the feeling of wanting to achieve something so badly that you don't even notice how tired or in pain you are. In a race, this typically occurs when you finally get a view of the finish line.
10. No matter your pace, you're still doing better than everyone sitting on the couch.
It doesn't matter if you're not naturally athletic, or if you're not the fastest runner in the game. What counts is that you're exercising and working toward improvements, and that's something to be proud of!
11. Running makes you feel good about yourself.
There's something about setting goals and achieving them that boosts self-confidence. Incorporating running into your life will make you a truly happier person, and I can't think of a greater benefit than that.
