If you were born in the late '90s, you might remember the following trends with love, or with some form of regret and anxiety. In what I believe to be a universal feeling, these are just a few of the defining moments of the early 2000s that I lowkey wish were still socially acceptable.
1. Butterfly hair clips
All of the coolest girls in grade school wore these clips in their hair with the addition of beautiful braids and crimps. You can even find them for sale on Amazon. Heck yeah!
2. Scrunchies
All of the time, most of my friends complain about how ugly these hair accessories were. Unlike them, I truly enjoyed scrunchies. Guilty! I still wear these scrunchies once in a while because they are so funky fresh.
3. WWJD Bracelets
If you grew up as a Christian, then you probably owned a multi-color pack and wore them with all of your friends. Personally, mine was bright pink and way too small. Shout out to all of the college students bringing these bracelets back.
4. Lip Smacker Chapsticks
Somehow, I got more excited about these little guys than food. I mean, I didn’t eat the chapstick, but I definitely valued their unique flavors.
5. Avril Lavigne, Aaron Carter, Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Blink 182, Destiny’s Child, NSYNC, Smash Mouth and Shania Twain.
Oh man! I am still in love with '90s and '00s music because it is nostalgic, but, at the same time, if you ever need some good dancing tunes, don't look any further.
6. Limited Too
The best place to shop at a young age. All of the stores had everything, or something new you desperately needed. You could buy shirts and tanks with rhinestones, and don't forget their amazing silk pajamas.
7. Razor scooters
Now, these bad boys gave true street credit in my neighborhood growing up. All of us neighbor kids would troll around our street with each other doing mild pranks. There are two great parts about Razors. One: you can’t really fall off and get hurt from these scooters unless you are a wanna-be skater daredevil child. Two: these Razors came in a series of colors; mine was red.
8. AOL Instant Messenger
You might have an embarrassing instant messenger or email name. You can find my old account at cherrylover27@aol.com. Why, Mom and Dad, why?
9. Signatures at the end of your text messages
I always had a signature on my text messages. Maybe I will start using this for my personal email account signature. For example, the signature often looked like this: $~* jEwLz *~$.
10. "The Amanda Show"
Easily the best television show to air on Nickelodeon (sorry, "Rugrats," you're only second best) and ten times better than "Hannah Montana." Yeah, you heard me. It is also the series known for those large devil-looking red lobsters, which have no comparison to real lobsters. #amiright?
11. "Space Jam"
This was my brothers' favorite movie; therefore, it was my favorite movie growing up, too. "Space Jam" will always have a special place in my heart, and it deserves to be watched intermittently.
