Every Longhorn puts their horns up to the most well-known alumni of UT, from Matthew McConaughey to Red McCombs, but how many of these successful Longhorns did you know once walked past that Austin Tower you see every day? Here are 11 Longhorns you probably didn’t know went to The University of Texas.
1. Janis Joplin
After graduating from high school in 1960, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Janis Joplin attended the University of Texas at Austin. In 1962, The Daily Texan ran an article on her stating: “She goes barefooted when she feels like it, wears Levis to class because they’re more comfortable, and carries her auto-harp with her everywhere she goes so that in case she gets the urge to break into song, it will be handy. Her name is Janis Joplin.”
2. Kevin Durant
Professional basketball player Durant currently plays small forward for the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA. He has won an NBA Most Valuable Player Award, the NBA Rookie of the Year Award and an Olympic gold medal. During his time at the University of Texas, Durant was the first freshman to ever receive the Naismith College Player of the Year award.
3. Lady Bird Johnson
Before becoming the First Lady of the United States (1963-69) and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient (1977), Lady Bird Johnson received a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors (1933) and a bachelor's degree in journalism cum laude (1934). On campus, she involved herself in organizations such as Orange Jackets. Her eldest daughter later attended UT as well.
4. Robert Rodriguez
American film director Robert Anthony Rodriguez is best known for the "Spy Kids" film series, "The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl," "Sin City," and "Machete." He attended the College of Communication and developed a successful daily comic strip for The Daily Texan entitled "Los Hooligans," which ran for three years.
5. Sanya Richards-Ross
Track and field athlete Sanya Richards-Ross won Olympic gold in the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. She has also claimed six medals from the World Championships in Athletics. She won the NCAA national championship in the 400-meter her freshman year at UT.
6. Michael S. Dell
Dell is the founder and CEO of Dell Inc. He ranked as the 41st richest person in the world on Forbes' list of billionaires in 2012. He started off as a pre-med student at UT, selling upgrade kits for personal computers in the Dobie Center.
7. Rick Riordan
Best known for writing the "Percy Jackson & the Olympians" series, Rick Riordan graduated from the University of Texas with a double major in English and history.
8. Joscelin Yeo Wei Ling
Yeo is a national swimmer of Singapore who won 40 gold medals at the Southeast Asian Games. She was the first female student athlete at UT to be offered the prestigious Rhodes scholarship. She majored in Education and made the Dean's List in the department of Kinesiology and Health Education.

Stephanie Diana Wilson is an engineer and NASA astronaut. She is the second African-American woman to go into space. After earning a bachelor of science degree at Harvard University, Wilson received a master of science degree in aerospace engineering at UT.
11. Todd Lowe
Best known as Terry Bellefleur on HBO’s "True Blood" and Lane Kim’s faithful husband Zach Van Gerbig on "Gilmore Girls," Todd Lowe graduated from the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1999.
