It's September, but that doesn't mean the adventure has to stop. There are lots of trips to take in the fall, and those are my favorite. Hikes through the woods whose trees have colorful leaves, most of which are already on the ground. And the chilly weather makes for a bonfire that you can really enjoy.
Now, when planning your trip, there are a few things we tend to forget about which are crucial for us to be able to enjoy every second of that much-needed vacation. So, here are a few tips I've gathered from some of my past adventures:
1. Pack Light
This goes without saying that everyone always packs way too many things, more clothes than there are days, and unnecessary articles of clothing, too. So, think about your trip, what you'll be doing, and only pack what you are 100% certain you'll wear. If you're not sure, don't bring it. Think about having to carry that second sweater around in your bag for a "just in case" moment. How often do those happen anyway? Pack what you need, and the rest can be done without.
2. Plan Your Activities
I find it better and more enjoyable to know what I'm going to be doing before I go on a trip, rather than figure it out as I go along. Having a map or even a vague itinerary saves you time deciding what to do. If you are going with a group of family or friends, talk about the activities ahead of time so you just get on the plane or in the car and you already know where you're going and what you're doing.
3. Interact With The Natives
They know where all the hot spots are and will know where to get the best food. Don't solely rely on the hotel staff or even brochures to tell you where to go and what to see. Brochures lie, and hotel staff will send you to the expensive places. But those who have been living in that city will know the right place to send you for a more cultural experience.
4. Bring A Camera
If you're anything like me, you love a great picture perfect moment. And if it's not there, I'll make one happen. I can transform into that tourist in a new city that will nonstop bust out my camera and snap a picture at a random building. Have no shame, my friends. You're there to explore and have a good time. Why not want to remember it?
5. Don't Bring Your Cellphone
There have been a few trips I've taken when I've had no functioning phone or reception, and those have been my favorite trips thus far. Not having to worry about checking in with anyone or catching up on my social media was a relief, and though it was weird at first that my phone was useless, I soon forgot about it to focus on my adventures. If you need to bring it, fine. But stay away from it as much as you can. Trust me; it'll be worth your while.
6. Keep A Travel Journal
Now, this is not a diary. A travel journal is for those explorers who want to write down what they did, what they saw, and what they learned each day of their trip. I did it when I visited a few countries in Europe and it was amazing. Jotting down quick thoughts even works as a travel journal. It captures your feelings at that moment and that's something you want to remember and even look back on.
7. Create A Playlist
I can't live without music. I'm constantly listening to my favorite old and new tracks on repeat and I have different playlists for different times of day, for different occasions, and for different moods. So, as your planning your adventure, think of your favorite songs that can represent how you're going to feel while away. If you're planning on doing some hiking, motivational music is great. If you're going to Paris or Venice, then a few love songs are perfect. And if you're taking a road trip, crank up the pop tunes as loud as you can and belt your heart out.
8. Get Up Early, Go To Bed Late
This one might seem odd, but I did it and it worked wonders for me. Getting up early and going to sleep late gave me more time during the day to explore as much of whatever city I was in as possible. Now, I'm not a vampire who doesn't need to sleep, so I would nap, but honestly, I was too caught up in the excitement of exploration to be bothered by the exhaustion that was slowly creeping up on me. Take advantage of where you are and sacrifice sleep for a couple more hours of wondrous sunrises and sunsets.
9. List Your Souvenirs Ahead Of Time
This is especially helpful when you have a big family or lots of friends. At the end of your vacation, do you really want to be running around trying to find things to bring back with you? It's a much better idea to plan it out so you can take your time finding what you like and so that you don't forget anyone, either.
10. Don't Be Afraid Of New Experiences
This should be self-explanatory, but there are people who I know that have gone on vacation and rarely left their hotel room. That's not what a vacation is about (unless you're at a spa). Traveling to someplace new requires you to get out of your comfort zone to experience the new culture. Trying new foods. Learning a new language. Meeting new people. It's all part of the adventure. It would be a waste to miss up on some pretty incredible opportunities.
So, there you have it. Next time you take a trip, maybe one of these tips can make it easier, more enjoyable, and truly an adventure for you. Happy Travels!
