Anxiety and depression seem to be a lot more common than I'd like to think these days. Being in college and meeting such a wide variety of people, its easy to meet more than one person who suffers from anxiety, depression or both. Having both anxiety and depression myself, there are many people in my life who have tried to help by saying every phrase in the book. Depression and anxiety are not fun and whenever we try to explain it to anybody, it feels like we are never using the right words or communicating to people what is really going on in our lives. Over the years, people have said a variety of things and to be completely honest, if I hear one of these phrases again, I might eye roll myself into another dimension.
1. "Just chill, calm down."
Are you for real? I'm trying, but apparently you can't see that.
2. "Stop worrying."
You don't think I've tried that?
3. "You're being overdramatic."
Sorry I overthink everything that happens to me??? Having anxiety/depression doesn't make us dramatic, it just makes us feel like every single situation we are in is so much more dramatic than it is made out to be.
4. "You don't make any sense."
Well you wearing flip flops at the end of October when its cold and rainy out doesn't make sense to me, so...
5. "Stop bringing everybody down. Just because you're sad doesn't mean you have to make everyone else sad too."
LOL. ALRIGHT.
6. "Have you tried meditating or talking to anybody?"
When you have anxiety/depression, like I mentioned before, it feels like even when you try to do the right thing, it never feels like the right thing to do. You could talk to countless counselors, work out a ton, even eat your feelings with a couple rows of oreos, nothing ever feels right.
7. "It's just a phase. You'll grow out of it."
Will you ever grow out of being so insensitive? We'll never know.
8. "You'll be fine."
This look explains it all.
9. "I remember when I had anxiety once, then I grew out of it."
Well woopdie frickin' doo. Would you like a sticker?
10. "Get yourself together, you're fine."
Do you mind crawling into my brain and telling me that every other second of the day when I overthink ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING?!!?
