8 Lessons I've Learned Since Bid Day

Going through the sorority rush process, I didn't quite know what to expect. I always had a ton of questions going through my head but I knew the only way you really get those answers is to experience it. Well, now, three months later, I can say I have most of those answers.

These are just a couple of things that I have realized since joining a sorority...

1. I spend all of my time at the house

When I first joined a sorority, I had figured I would spend at least 1-2 hours at the house a day. Between meals, doing homework, or just hanging out with friends, I am there for at least half of the day. It is so fun to be there with everyone, constantly surrounded by your best friends and eating every meal with them: just like family!

2. Time management is crucial

Joining a sorority, there is a huge demand for a social life, academic life and the balance between the two. It's important to realize that you won't be able to do everything. Finding that balance between the two will make you so successful and prepare you for when things get really tough as you grow up. There are tons and tons of social events that sororities put on, so don't worry about missing one or two; there will always be more!

3. It's important to step outside of your comfort zone

Meet new people! Trying new things helps you grow as a person. I met some of my best friends by just saying hi or introducing myself at the beginning of the year, now we're living together next year!

4. Your sisters are your best resources

Not only are your sisters there to love and support you always, they are also there for you when you're looking for different opportunities across campus, or needing help with tough homework. Each and every day I feel loved, cherished and supported by every girl I encounter. I can always count on someone to put a smile on my face when I need it most or give me a pep talk on how great I will do on my upcoming test.

5. We truly make a difference

Through our philanthropies, we are able to help local organizations and people nationwide that need our love and support more than anything. I have more of an appreciation for service work and have really become a better person because of the work I have already done in the few months I have been here.

7. Going greek doesn't set me apart from others

It's incredible to be apart of something so big but at the same time feels so small once you get to know everyone. We're one big family. At the same time, being in a sorority doesn't make me more special than the girls that didn't rush. It's okay to not want to join something like this; it's intimidating! But for the girls that are on the fence or deciding, rush! You will not regret it, because....

8. It's not four years, it's a lifetime

Just like everyone says, the friends you make within your sorority are your friends for life. This friendship surpasses the four years in college and continue on for the rest of your life. I look forward to sharing this life with the best 'sisters' a girl could ask for!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
