Say goodbye to Freddy Krueger and hello to Jack Frost

10 Things That Happen Right After Halloween
  • 1.Christmas. Christmas everywhere

It’s 2015, it’s November first and I want to be dead to the world after a late night out dressed as a pirate. Instead, I wake up at 9AM to Christmas carols. I realize before my eyes are even open, that the same thing will be playing at the mall and that witches-brew is all-too-soon draining from my life for the year.

  • 2.Mom saying “I got your Christmas present”

It’s only November. I literally just pulled my winter jacket out from under my bed. It’s not black Friday. Why are you already shopping?

  • 3.Saving for gifts to come

Well mom already called, guess I have to follow. I’m in college and opted out of a side job because I barely have time to sleep (did I mention it’s mid-terms?) and I have to buy presents for the whole family plus my friends. I live with six girls. I have twenty-nine first cousins. I can’t.

  • 4.Hearing vacation plans

There’s a month before I come home for Thanksgiving mom, I’m pretty sure I have time to think about what sweaters I want to take to Waterville this year for the annual ski trip. By the way, one of my friends is going to Bermuda instead.

  • 5.Rotting Jack-o-lanterns

There’s that one sad, lonely pumpkin on every doorstep that no one wants to take care of quite yet. Maybe they’re lazy, but it’s kind of comforting how people don’t seem to be ready to let go of it yet.

  • 6.Practically free candy

“CANDY 80% OFF” in every window is kind of the high point of the winter, to be honest.

  • 7.People are waiting for the snow

I know it’s definitely cold enough for it, but I’m not going to sit here and listen to you beg Mother Nature for snow just so I can listen to you complain about walking across campus in a ton of fresh powder.

  • 8.The leaves are gone

Literally everything is grey. It’s cold, it’s dark, and the “fall colors” that everyone in New England loves? Yeah, that’s over.

  • 9.Christmas themed rom-coms

Cable is overrun by the Christmas spirit. In college, you’d think I wouldn’t have that problem; but now I have to scroll past the “Christmas rom-com” section on Netflix to get to the anime that I just want to finish before finals.

  • 10.Everybody is sick

No, I’m not getting the flu shot. No, I don’t feel sick. I know everyone else does, and it sucks.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
