Hosted in Cleveland, the Republican National Convention (RNC) was last week and lasted for a total of four days. It was chock full of surprises, drama, and Trumps.
As I was listening to the speeches, there were a few moments of surprisingly liberal ideas being iterated through the RNC. Trump mentioned the LGBT community, mentioned Bernie twice, and Ivanka Trump talked about the wage gap between men and women. Now in the national election, Trump has to fix his public image, and re-brand himself to appeal to the masses of reasonable citizens. Here are a few moments I found surprising that happened during the RNC.1. Trump's comment about protecting the LGBT community:
Note how he doesn't make any promises about advancing or supporting their rights. But do I sense a last minute jab to garner votes from the LGBT community?
2. When the LGBT comment was met with applause:
The GOP is notorious for being ridiculously anti-progressive on gay rights. Could this comment be another way of illustrating how much of an “outsider” Trump is, how distinguished he is from the establishment?
3. Noting how primaries rigged against Bernie Sanders:
Political analysts are predicting that some of Sanders supporters, sick of the establishment, are opting to join Trump's camp. Personally, I find it hard to believe that socialists would swing to the right just to stop Hillary.
4. Trump agreeing with Bernie Sanders:
“Her [Clinton] bad instincts and her bad judgment – something pointed out by Bernie Sanders – are what caused the disasters unfolding today."
The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
5. Not ridiculing protesters:
Not taking down the protester (code pink). At previous rallies, Trump would mention and take down any protesters present at his rallies. However, at the RNC, he displayed a surprising restraint against protestor. The protestor is a member of Code Pink: Women for Peace, which is a NGO that “CODEPINK is a women-led grassroots organization working to end U.S. wars and militarism, support peace and human rights initiatives, and redirect our tax dollars into healthcare, education, green jobs and other life-affirming programs”.
6. Ivanka Trump's Speech (including her opinion on women in the workforce):
"7. When Ivanka Trump again spoke such truth:
"By talking about the wage gap, a common topic among liberals, will Ivanka Trump rally enough of the women vote? Probably not.
8. Tiffany Trump
Frankly, I didn’t even know there was another one. Apparently, she is the only child of Trump’s second marriage with Marla Maples. A recent grad from the University of Pennsylvania, her father and sister’s alma mater, she delivered a supportive and issue-dodging speech. Fun fact: her boyfriend, a registered democrat, attended the RNC.
9. Please pay my tuition:
"He can't bear the injustice of college graduates who are crippled by student debt." -Ivanka Trump.
10. Ted Cruz not endorsing Trump
I bet you all already know about this. However, when candidates choose to run for office in a political party, they sign a pledge to support the eventual nominee. I guess the pledge was just empty words for the rumored zodiac killer. Typical of politicians; saying one thing and doing another.
