Music is one of the most important things in my life. It has always been there for me. Whatever mood I am in, there is a song for that, if I am feeling happy I can listen to some Andy Grammer, if I just got my heartbroken I can listen to some Taylor Swift, if I am getting ready to go out with my friends I can listen to some Kesha or Pitbull or if I feel like I need some Jesus I can listen to Matt Maher.
Throughout my 20 odd years, there have been so many songs that I have claimed as my favorite. These range from Springsteen by Eric Church, to Hey Beautiful by the Jonas Brothers, to Run The World by Beyoncé. But nothing will ever compare to the songs that I have heard that made an impact on my life.
1. "Missing You" by All Time Low.
It is only right that this song is first on the list. This song is what inspired this article. I was having a rough week and a friend of mine is a huge fan of All Time Low. She sent this song to me and I listened to it on repeat for the next four days and it honestly made me feel so much better. I am forever thankful for my friend sending me this song.
2. "Carry On" by Fun.
There is nothing I love more than the sound of Nate Ruess's voice, he could sing the alphabet and I would be in awe. The one lyric that stands out most to me is "may your past be the sound of feet upon the ground, carry on." For me it means not to dwell in the past and to simply carry on.
3. "Heroes" by David Bowie.
If you feel like you know this song but don't know where you know it from, it is the tunnel song from Perks of Being a Wallflower. This song has so much meaning to mean mainly for the lyric "we can be heroes, just for one day." I was sitting at my dining room table one day and my best friend came over and he kept singing the song all day. He wrote that lyric down on a wrapper and left it on the table before he left my house that day. It was the last time we were going to see each other for a while, so the song was a reminder of him and the wrapper stayed in my wallet for a very long time. I lost it recently and I am actually pretty upset about it even though it is just a piece of paper with words written on it.
4. "Then" by Brad Paisley.
I remember the moment I heard this song for the first time. I was at a Brad Paisley concert and before the song was even over, I claimed that it would be my wedding song, despite being 16 and single at the time. My mind has not changed nor has my relationship status. But this song just hit me in such a way and made me think, I want a love like that.
5. " I Hope You Dance" by Lee Ann Womack
This has to be included in a list of songs that impacted my life because this might be the first song to ever make me cry and the first song I had an emotional connection with. It was my kindergarten graduation song and it was always the song they used, but my class was the last time it was used because one of the teachers passed away and it was her favorite song.
6. "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" from Song of the South.
Growing up my grandpa would always be singing this song to me, he died when I was eight. This song is one of the few memories I have of him.
7. "Letter to Me" by Brad Paisley.
Another Brad Paisley song, but trust me, this one you have to give a chance. I first heard it during my senior year of high school and there were two different lyrics that stuck out to me and stuck with me. The first being "at seventeen, its so hard to see past Friday night" and for me that could not have been more that true, my best friend at the time did not go to the same school as me so we would spend our Friday nights together and it was a constant countdown to then. I wish that I could go back and relive the moment I missed while I was looking forward to those nights. The second lyric that stuck with me was "have no fear, these are no where near the best years of your life", everyone tells you that high school is supposed to be the best time of your life, and for most people, it isn't and it is nice to be reminded that there are better times ahead.
8. "History in the Making" by Darius Rucker.
This song reinforces the idea that you are always making memories and you never really know how significant that moment really is.
9. "Where Were You" by Alan Jackson.
This song was written about 9/11. Every time I hear I flash back to that day as if it were yesterday and I was only 5 that day. This song has such a powerful impact about such a devastating event.
10. "Hall of Fame" by The Script.
The Script is my favorite band so obviously I had to include one of their songs in this list and I saved the best for last. This song has such a powerful and uplifting feel to it, it makes me feel like I can conquer the world.
All of these songs have made a tremendous impact on my life. If you know me personally, I have tattoos of lyrics from half of them, that is how much of an impact they have had on my life. I want them with me forever. There are so many other songs that have affected my life, but I felt that these were the ones that needed recognition. So give them a listen, and if you have any that have made an impact on your life, leave a comment for me, I love listening to music that other people suggest, it is like a window into their life.
