We all know how it goes around this time of the year. "New year, new me" and all that stuff. But that sounds a little ambitious if you ask me. Every year we all make these outrageous resolutions to change all of these bad habits we think we have and just end up doing none of them because they were too unrealistic and overwhelming. So it seems like this year we need to aim a little lower. Yes, my advice is to lower your expectations. No, it is not being lazy. It's called baby steps. According to TIME Magazine, these are the 10 most commonly broken New Year's resolutions. According to me, this is how we can actually fulfill them.
1. Failed resolution: lose weight and get fit.
Realistic resolution: Put the bowl of chips on the other side of the room so you actually have to get up and walk all the way across the room to get to them.
2. Failed resolution: quit smoking.
Realistic resolution: Yeah. Do that. No getting around it.
3. Failed resolution: learn something new.
Realistic resolution: How the last season of "How I Met Your Mother" ended is something new to you. Get at it.
4. Failed resolution: eat healthier and diet.
Realistic resolution: Eat ice cream for dessert, not for dinner.5. Failed resolution: pay off debt.
Realistic resolution: Steer clear of Target. It sucks you in and takes all of your money.
6. Failed resolution: spend more time with family.
Realistic resolution: Call mom. She really is the bomb.
7. Failed resolution: travel to new places.
Realistic resolution: Leave your bed at least once every day.
8. Failed resolution: be less stressed.
Realistic resolution: Only one mental breakdown a day, you got that?
9. Failed resolution: Volunteer.
Realistic resolution: Do one good deed a day. Even the small things count.
10. Failed resolution: drink less.
Realistic resolution: Class it up and go for the wine.
So, just to recap. When you're trying to tell yourself that you are going to become a vegan, be more positive, and volunteer every day, stop. That is far too ambitious. Remember, baby steps. And stop telling yourself every year to cut out junk food cold turkey. That is just a sad life. Treat yourself. Yes, it is a new year -- but a new you is not necessary.
