We’ve all heard about the perks of dating a doctor, the benefits of marrying a lawyer, and so on. The money that is provided to a lifestyle or relationship by having one of these careers is undeniably a bonus, but what about the perks of dating a DJ? For the past few years, my boyfriend has been the DJ of many events, and I have been lucky enough to tag along for most of them. Of course, I have learned a lot about equipment and music, so I am actually somewhat useful, and the paychecks are nothing to complain about, but there are many other perks to dating a DJ.
1. You get to know a lot of music.
I have been to events ranging from an elementary school Halloween dance to a 30th high school reunion, and most places in between. Getting to sit- in and listen to the music of all age ranges has really broadened my musical knowledge. This is also awesome because now there are SO many songs I can sing along to in most settings and situations. It is wonderful.
2. You get to go to parties you weren’t even invited to.
While I feel guilty every time I go along for a DJ gig because I was most likely not invited, it is pretty awesome. It’s an excuse to dress up, and there is usually free food involved. Need I say more…?
3. You actually are helpful.
Since I have been tagging along for so long, I know how most of the stuff works. I help set up and tear down, and sometimes my musical suggestions are considered. I have been trained in the equipment, so I can run the music for a two-minute bathroom break. I have learned a lot about technology, chords and lighting, so I feel like I am more of a help than a burden (unless I'm hungry or tired). I also get to take pictures and post to social media to promote DJ FillyD (see what I did there?), so when I’m referred to as the manager I don’t think it is complete sarcasm.
4. No one knows you.
Most of the people there don’t know you, and even if they do, they aren’t really paying attention to you. Therefore, you can sit there and sing and dance with yourself for hours. Every event I go to, I just sit and do the seat dance while singing really loudly because the speaker is right next to me and no one can hear me (at least I don’t think they can … ). I really enjoy this perk because sometimes you just need moments like this.
5. You get to watch people have fun.
This is the most enjoyable part. When you watch people have a good time, you have a good time, too. At all of the high school dances, it is so awesome to see people have fun and get really excited when a favorite song comes on. At weddings, it is so heartwarming to be a part of someone’s special day and watch all of the love in the room. Couples dancing, families together, and the newlyweds sharing their first dance are all wonderful moments to witness. It seems a little creepy because I don’t know these people and I sometimes cry during the wedding toasts of complete strangers, but it’s all good. I just love to see people happy, and a wedding is the best place to see just that.
6. Weddings
What girl doesn’t love to go to a wedding and see all of the decorations, flowers, hairstyles and dresses? You get ideas to add to your own dream wedding Pinterest board (we all know you have one).
7. You get to have dance parties in the basement.
The night before a big gig, it is a good idea to check equipment and test out the playlist. So, why not make a little dance party out of it?
8. It’s always an adventure.
Whether it is taking a road trip to the gig, or a road trip to Guitar Center to get more lights, it is always an adventure. Actually, any trip with me as co-pilot leads to an adventure, but that’s beside the point.
9. He takes you on a date for helping.
After the gig and the check is cashed, you get taken out on a nice date for helping. At least my DJ does this for me ... If you are dating a DJ and he doesn’t do this, you may want to suggest it next time he needs your help.
10. He’s awesome.
Though all of these perks are pretty great, the best part about dating a DJ is he is awesome! DJ’s are cool, and you feel cool sitting beside one in the booth. Chances are, he is also very fun.The lights, music, dance moves, and emcee skills are very entertaining. It is a really fun hobby, and it is even more fun when you get to share it with each other!
So, if you ever get asked out by a DJ, or get invited to tag along to DJ a wedding, go! It is always a blast.
