As one year slowly comes to a close, countless individuals get increasingly more excited for the next year to come. As 2017 ended, everyone was excited about a fresh start, too bad the internet had to explode on January 1st, 2018. Logan Paul single-handedly destroyed the optimism of millions upon millions of individuals.
For those of you who have somehow not heard about the horrible actions of Logan Paul mocking both Japanese culture and the act of suicide within three short days of each other, I’m not going to spend too much time explaining it all. If you want to hear more about it, my friend actually already wrote an article describing it in its entirety. I’m here to explain the issues of Logan Paul and his brother Jake Paul, and how these teens get paid millions for intolerable actions.
Rise and Fall
The two Paul brothers were once revered as two creative and humorous individuals who completely dominated the now dead social media platform known as Vine. At that time, I actually truly enjoyed their content, probably because they were only on camera for seven seconds. After Vine slowly began to wither away from the mainstream, the “Viners” began to transition towards YouTube, where they could still create content and all of their fan bases would surely follow.
When Vine finally died, the Paul brothers went full throttle into their respective YouTube careers since it would prove to produce a great amount of revenue. The beginning of their YouTube careers seemed very promising at first, both of them releasing a plethora children-friendly content that served both entertain and teach. Jake Paul even obtained a contract with Disney to star in their original series "Bizaardvark," and Logan Paul obtained a good amount of acting roles such as "The Thinning" and "The Space Between Us," with both of their channels exploding at the same time. Their professional success stories were at their peak, but then...
Jake Paul started to become more involved with his own company called Team 10, causing havoc instead of innocent entertainment, vandalizing personal property and disturbing the peace of those around him. Logan Paul constantly defended his brother’s actions allowing for himself to take a piece of the publicity. After constant misconduct and a slew of disrespectful diss tracks, Jake Paul was hastily dismissed from Disney in the middle of filming season two of "Bizaardvark."
Logan Paul was revered as “the better brother” for a while, and Jake Paul was known as the black sheep. This trend continues on for a solid amount of time, and here we are today with jokes about suicide and culture. A story that has also not gotten a lot of publicity comparatively to Logan is the thumbnail of Jake having sex with his girlfriend in a video titled I Lost My Virginity. The worst part is, that video was about a ski trip pertaining to nothing about the title nor the thumbnail. The two brothers quickly transitioned from children-friendly entertainers, into a poison that taints the minds of countless children that idolize the two brothers.
The YouTube Loophole
Now we have to ask ourselves, why did this rapid change occur? The culture did not call for them to do this, it was a change dependent all on greed. YouTube has long transitioned away from rewarding those who are the most creative. The more controversy and clickbait you can create, the more views and exposure you are given, which equates to greater income.
Those diss tracks fulfilled every single role that a creator needed to end up on the trending page of YouTube: clickbait, controversy, and receives traffic from the reactions and response tracks of other creators. Then after the diss track trend ended abruptly, they were forced to deliver more controversy in other ways.
Since then, the two brothers spent most of their time creating a reality show where they fake their relationships and fights with other people, as well showing off their own riches in obnoxious manners. Now their own brands of controversy have evolved into a beast that does not show any mercy to mental issues and innocence of the mind.
The saddest part about all this, no matter how appalled we all are at their actions, their channels are at an all-time high in terms of numbers. Logan Paul's latest apology video is at 43 million views at the time of writing this article, and while his advertising opportunities have been taken aback by YouTube, he is still very successful in terms of those numbers.
None of this misconduct will ever go away as long as they are making, along with the platform that houses their content, our speech towards them will only serve to make them more money. Boundaries will continue to be tested until they are both terminated from YouTube.
