A part of being in America means that we will eventually need to learn how to do things the “American” way-- including celebrating the birth of this great nation. From eating insane burgers to setting off contraband fire-crackers. Here is a beginner’s guide to American things that they can do to enjoy this July 4th.
1. Grill Out!
Burgers. Hot dogs. More burgers.Burgers. Hot dogs. More burgers. This goes without saying--with the concoction of our favorite corn syrup-laden ketchup and mustard, it can go no wrong. Finish off with a lot of watermelon, and get super-sweet lemonade as a drink. Don’t wear tight jeans that day, and don’t think of going swimming for the rest of the day.
2. Wear all things American
T-shirts, flip flops, towels, bikinis, shorts-- whatever you choose, make sure Betsy Ross’s flag shines in your outfit. You can wear the whole flag if you want to.
3. Drink American beer
I hate to break it to you, but Budweiser is in fact an American style ale made in Belgium(despite the appealing 4th of July special 6 packs). So, brands like Miller High Life are good true American alternatives.
4. Watch the Fireworks
This is easy. Every town has a fireworks show. Its beautiful. Sip some beer while you’re watching it.
5. Watch a Hot Dog Eating Contest
Every year, thousands of people flock to Coney Island for the popular Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest this day. Started in 1916, the competition started as a contest to see who was the most patriotic amongst the competitors. Watch people as they try to shovel more than 50 hotdogs within 10 mins.
6. Better. Participate in a food challenge
It’s a given that food portions are much bigger in America, but to make things even grander, take a food challenge in a restaurant like the 72 oz Steak challenge in Amarillo, TX. There must be at least one in your town. Watch Adam Richman for inspiration, maybe.
7. Make an American Playlist
Anything with the words “America”, “American”, “Proud”, and “Freedom” will do. Some Bruce Springsteen maybe?
8. Play it while driving a pick-up Truck
America has a love affair with trucks. They are practical both for the metropolis and for the rural, which is why everyone loves it.
9. Attend a football/baseball game
Even though it might take a while for you to learn the rules, it is always fun to finally get a hang of it, and maybe even pick teams to support and prepare for the Superbowl later.
10. Eat at a late-night diner
The 4th of July will for sure be tiring. Refuel yourself with a late night meal of bacon, eggs, chicken wings and cheeseburger served in diners or house of waffles.
