Yoga is a practice that asks you "how do you feel?" rather than "how do you look?" It is a practice that dates back to before the written word and has been proven to reduce stress, aid in rehabilitation of diseases and injuries, and create a sense of community (It also makes your butt look good, but that isn't the point). As a certified yoga instructor, I hear a lot of excuses from people who think they will be "bad" at yoga. In reality, you are great at yoga just for stepping on the mat. Here are a few of the misconceptions and stories you may be believing.
1. "Yoga is for girls."
That's interesting, because here is a picture of Lebron James leading a yoga class for Nike Basketball Academy. Other male athletes that practice include everyone on the New York Football Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, and others.
2. "I'm not skinny enough to do yoga."
Look at this beautiful and healthy yoga goddess slaying her practice without needing to be a size 2.3. "I'm not flexible enough."
If someone's grandparents are willing to do some stretching, I'm really not sure what your excuse is.4. "I don't own any Lulu Lemon."
You can do yoga in literally anything. You can do it naked, if that's your thing. NEVER think that your ability to do anything depends on how much money you spend on pants5. "Yoga classes are expensive."
Yes, some studios do charge a fee for every class, but many locations will take donations instead of a set price, let you sweep the floor in exchange for a class, or sign up for membership deals. Also consider YouTube videos, DVDs from the library, and community centers.
6. "Only white people do yoga."
Yoga originated in India, so this is not valid in any way. Also, yoga is beneficial for your health, despite race, nationality, or ethnicity.
7. "I'm too busy and stressed to do yoga."
That's exactly why you need it! It doesn't have to be a full 90-minute class, you can just take 15 minutes to do some poses and breathing, and you will feel more prepared to deal with whatever you are claiming is more important than your mental health (it isn't). Unroll a mat or towel at your office, in a park, in your living room, or wherever you happen to be in this exact moment.
8. "All yogis are vegetarians or vegans."
Maybe you are and maybe you aren't — either way is perfectly fine. On a personal note, I've been doing yoga for nine years, and I love chicken nuggets as much as I love savasana (that's A LOT).
9. "I need a workout that actually feels like working out."
Go to an hour of heated yoga that includes a lot of Downward Facing Dogs and Planks, and then we'll talk about what a "workout" feels like.
10. "It's just not my thing."
Before you make this statement, have you ever even tried it? If not, give it a chance before making this claim. If the answer is yes, consider what it was about the class or instructor that you did not enjoy. Don't let one bad experience ruin what could be such a blessing in your daily life!
