Just like we learned and then unlearned that Christopher Columbus discovered America, there are some classic life lessons that couldn't hurt to be left behind as well.
1. The only way to belong is by fitting in
Constantly comparing yourself to others isn't a healthy habit. Just be you, go with the flow, and enjoy the ride! Plus,
2. What people think of you matters
Completely untrue. What's important is that you are the best person that YOU think you can be. Dr. Seuss once said "be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."
3. It’s selfish to love yourself
There is no evidence that says by loving yourself you can't love others. I would even go as far as to make the case that you can't really love others to your full potential without loving yourself first.
4. Letting your walls come down is a sign of weakness
Breaking down emotional barriers can put you in a more vulnerable position but it in no way devalues you're character. In fact, by building up and maintaining those walls you could be missing out on amazing opportunities!
5. Failure is bad
How else are you going to learn!? The ability to "fail forward" will prove valuable later in life.
6. Always put others before yourself
It's great to put others before yourself! I encourage it as it can help you build character and a sense of responsibility later on. However, sometimes you just need to do what's best for you, even if that means you can't always be there to cover your co-workers shift or lend your best friend $50.
7. Doing things alone will make you lonely
A common misconception is that the mere act of being alone will lead you to loneliness. I bet that in your life you will find yourself doing things independently from others, embrace it! Pick yourself up, buy yourself dinner, take yourself to a movie, and love every minute of it!
8. If you lose weight you’ll be happier
9. Money equals success
If you are living a life that you love, regardless of how much you make, you are successful! How can anyone even claim success if they aren't happy?
10. Responsibility is more important than dreams
Similarly, if you do what you love and what you'll be happy doing, you'll figure out a way to make it all work! If dressing business casual and working in an office isn't on your bucket list, do something that is.
