Carrie Bradshaw, Samantha Jones, Charlotte Goldenblatt, and Miranda Hobbes didn't just teach us how to survive in the city but are our friendship goals and the ultimate #SquadGoals. In "Sex and the City" we saw each of these girls go through horrendous events, make mistakes, watched Samantha sleep with 41 men and one woman, lose their temper once or twice, and still manage to stay on the top of their game finding happiness in the end. Yes, we all managed to somehow see ourselves in each of these women, but then HBO shattered us all into a million pieces as each went through things we hope we never have to (but all probably have), only to tidy it all up in the end on Feb. 22, 2004.
Let's take a look back on what "Sex and the City" has taught us all.
1. Friends are the real "loves of your life."
Carrie and the girls spent most of their time in their own little worlds, but they couldn't have gotten through any of it without each other. And most of all, when shit got real, they were right by each other's sides. Even if they had to travel out on New Year's in heels and pajamas all the way to their best friend's house.
2. Never let anyone dictate what you can and cannot do.
If there is one thing that "Sex and the City" all taught us, it was to do what you please when you want to. It doesn't matter how old you got, how slutty your clothes were, or if you just broke up with the love of your life, these girls knew to never take 'no' for an answer.
3. That some women just weren't meant to be tamed.
We all know the crazy Big and Carrie moments, the Carrie and Aleksandr moments, the Samantha and James/Maria/Richard/Jerry (to name a few) moments, the Miranda and Steve moments, and of course the Charlotte and Trey and then Harry moments. These women went through many partners, but they finally realized they shouldn't change themselves to fit another person's life.
4. Keep your skinny jeans.
Amen, Miranda!
'Nuff said.
5. "All you need is love, and diamonds, and those heels, and that dress."
All you truly need in life. Well... pretty much.
6. Your girls will be the best bridesmaids ever.
We all get to that point in life where we think of settling down, and then the big moment comes where you decide who you want to be your bridesmaids. Your best friends should always be your first pick. They'll be the ones there for the tears (and tears, they'll be there with the sewing kit), they'll make sure everything is perfect, they'll know exactly who to keep out of your way, and most of all they'll be there for you every day afterward.
7. That figuring out life takes time.
"Eventually all things fall into place. Until then, laugh at the confusion, live for the moments, and know everything happens for a reason."
Just like Carrie when she moved to the city, we all think that we have to have it all figured out, but sometimes you just have to pull up into a drive through and make this famous order:
8. That we all want Carrie Bradshaw's closet.
She had the closet that everyone envied. Yes, she had some outrageous outfits, but don't lie to me, you too probably wanted to try them on at least once. It always felt like she had an outfit for every occasion, and a pair of shoes to go with every outfit. This is something we learned because we all probably understand we can't have as glamorous a closet as hers, but it keeps our dedication to our work going, so that someday, maybe, down the road, we can create a closet as perfect as hers. And that retail therapy isn't a bad thing.
9. Heels in the city are impractical.
This brings me back to #1. Yes, the women of "Sex and the City" made wearing heels in the city look like a breeze, but during the times that they weren't shooting the show, they were wearing Ugg boots and flats on the side. As someone who spends much time in New York and is moving there, I can say from experience, heels, and the city aren't compatible. They are nowhere near #RelationshipGoals. So, pack your heels in your bag and slip on a pair of flats, flip-flops, or sneakers because standing on the MTA in 5-inch heels, or walking 5th Avenue to Saks, in those killer shoes are nowhere near fun. When you're about a block from your destination slip on those heels and walk the runway of New York City.
10. Don't be afraid to be yourself.
If there was one phrase to wrap up the meaning of "Sex and the City" it would be, don't be afraid to be yourself. All these women went through so much with love, friendship, workforce, etc., but one thing they all always did was stay true to themselves. Samantha stayed her promiscuous self all the way through, but she still stood with her girls. Miranda stayed quirky and self-driven and always made time for her family. Charlotte knew her goals and reached them. She finally was able to have children, and finally figured out the right guy for her. And Carrie. Our old, good friend, Carrie. She stayed true to what she always wanted, didn't let anyone tell her no, and reached for her dreams even when everyone told her she would fail. Don't be afraid to be yourself, because yes, people will judge you, but you'll be the one going where you want to.
Within the two movies and six seasons "Sex and the City" knew how to teach us all about love, sex, friendship, marriage, work, and of course how to just deal with life. We learned that most of the time you just need your girls by your side and that no matter how many guys you go through, there will always be one that stays in the back of your mind, and that sometimes guys just suck. These ten things are a short list of what "Sex and the City" taught us, but with all of these in mind, it's easy to see that living by what these four friends taught us, we can all find our way through the struggle of life.
