10 Habits To Better Your Life

"We first make our habits and then our habits make us." - John Dryden. Going to college is a time to discover yourself and better yourself. You are on your own now, so what better time than now to focus on you! By adopting a few new daily habits you may see some positive changes in your life.

1. Make your bed.

This simple act is your first chore of the day and by getting it done, you are starting your day off on a positive note. By making your bed you are completing your first accomplishment of the day which sets the tone for the rest of your day. Especially living in the dorms as a freshman, your space is limited, so having your bed made can make you fee like your life is put together (even though it very well may be a mess, at least you're trying.) Living in a space where you sleep, eat, do homework, and hang out often can become pretty messy, but if you take less than two minutes out of your day to make your bed, it will encourage you to keep the rest of your space clean.

2. Drink more water.

Water gives your body the energy it needs to get through your day. It is good for your skin, increases energy, flushes out toxins, and boosts your immune system. Always carry around water whether you are going to class, the gym, to the library, it is important to have one with you to stay hydrated.

3. Make lists.

Having a task-oriented day makes you feel accomplished like you are achieving mini-goals you set. Making lists helps you prioritize your tasks and helps you remember everything you have going on in your life because let's face it, college is all over the place and life gets hectic. I am all for organization, but seriously since I have come to college, lists are my obsession. There is something so satisfying about crossing things off that makes you feel so productive.

4. Get ready everyday.

Look good = feel good! Not to impress anyone (I mean if you want to go ahead), but look cute for you! When you're dressed cute, you feel better about yourself and it improves your overall mood.

5. Listen to your fave song every morning.

Whether it's Justin Bieber, Drake, or whatever pumps you up, listen to music in the morning while getting ready! It helps set your mood for the day in a fun. positive way.

6. Eat breakfast every day.

Seriously, I know you probably hear it all the time, but especially for students, this is essential. If you do not start your metabolism off in the morning, your whole day can be off balance. Nutrition is important, but specifically, a good breakfast to start your day is key to a successful day.

7. Smile.

Walking to class, it is easy to zone out or try and look busy on your phone to avoid eye contact with people passing. Yeah, everyone is guilty of it. Smile at someone new whether you know them or not, it can improve their day and put a positive spin on your day. Kindness IS considered a habit and an important one at that!

8. Give back.

Giving back can be fun and does not have to be something major! It can range from volunteering feeding the homeless to simply writing a note to your mom thanking her for being awesome. Helping others and showing your appreciations puts things into perspective and makes you grateful for all you have!

9. Set aside time every day without technology.

I am all for social media and the benefits it provides our society, but I am the first to admit it can be addicting. We constantly find ourselves checking our phones despite the fact that we probably checked it less than 20 seconds ago. Setting this time aside is important for everyone to just take a step back and relax. Pick up a book you have been wanting to read, write in a journal, or just sit outside and enjoy the sunshine! This is vital to maintain sanity with all the stresses of college.

10. Step out of your comfort zone.

Starting a new life in an unfamiliar place can have its challenges, but if you try to step out of your bubble, good things will come. Trying new things, meeting new people, and breaking down your walls are all part of the college experience. Some of the best memories are made during this chapter of your life so why not make the most of it?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
