Going greek is the best decision I have made by far and no doubt, it has changed my college life for the better. Honestly, it was something I have always wanted to do since I can remember being a little boy. I would encourage anyone to go Greek, and here are the reasons why.
1. Friends
I am part of a brotherhood that has over 90 active members strong currently, and we aren't even the biggest on campus. From there I think you can find one, maybe even two people, that you get along with. Honestly, my best friends in college are in my fraternity, and this isn't because the friendships were forced on us. It is simply because we are all so freaking weird we get along like puzzle pieces.
2. Intramural sports
Oh yeah, of course, you almost went D1, bro I feel it. Well here is your time to shine buddy. You play at weird hours in the day like 11 p.m. on a Tuesday with an 8 a.m. on Wednesday screaming in your face, but hey, you're in the IM Leagues Hall Of Fame.
3. Having a chance to be a leader.
People from the outside looking in don't really understand how the chapter works. Our advisor literally does just that, advises. It is a chapter ran by the members of the fraternity or sorority. Does it calm drama at dinner? Oh, you bet it does, but it builds leadership. There are millions of things you can volunteer if you are greek, just pick one and decide to lead it will help in the long run.
4. A place to chill during the day
My chapter is lucky enough to have a house on campus that includes the best napping couch in the nation, a huge basement where we have a ping pong table and couches dating back to the '90s, a full kitchen (that might need to be redone, holla at the alumni), asmall exec room and a few dorms that 20 of our of members live in.
5. Memories to last a lifetime
A whole year into Greek life and I could write a book about all the stuff that has happened. From just hanging around during the day and talking about stupid stuff to making crazy memories on the weekends. And this week, half the chapter is going to Tennesse for formal, so the memories keep on coming.
6. Business room experience
Every week we hold a chapter meeting that includes, budgets, dues, events, you name it in a normal business we cover it. Do these problems come up randomly at the lunch table over a milkshake? Yes, they do but it helps everyone understand that there is a time for play and a time to work.
7. Better grades
Take me, for example: in high school I had a 2.4 GPA, and now I am sitting pretty with a 3.3 GPA. The peer pressure to get good grades in greek life is almost shocking, the better you do the more dues you get off, so that is a plus too.
8. Looks good on a resume
Before college, my resume was filled with my bussing job. Now a few different internships are slowly and surely building it up. The meat and potatoes of my resume will be what I do in college, so why not do it all?
9. Doing fun Greek activities
Last week I took part in Walk A Mile; I had to walk a mile in women heels, (side note, ladies, that is amazing you put up with that) other activities with the whole greek community include homecoming, RockeTHON, greek week and much more. College should be about having fun and this is such an easy way to do it.
10. Secrets (shhh!)
If you don't like secrets you should probably leave...
