When I visit New York City with my friends, we always make it a point to do and see exciting things without spending a lot of money. I can tell you from experience that these 10 activities are cheap and are a lot more fun than standing in noisy, dirty and crowded Times Square.
1. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge.
Though it can get crowded at times, the incredible view is worth it.
2. Ride by the Statue of Liberty on the Staten Island Ferry
While there are ferries that go straight to Liberty Island and take you up close to or even inside of the Statue of Liberty for about $30, the Staten Island ferry is an alternative that will take you close enough to get good pictures for free.
3. Get a Black Tap milkshake
The famous milkshakes are $15, but large enough to share with a friend.
4. Go on a Celebrity hunt
5. Go to a baseball game.
Yankees tickets run as low as $10, and the Mets offer student discounts when you purchase the day of.
6. Visit the Strand Bookstore
If you’re into books, this place is pretty much equivalent to Heaven.
7. Get a Magnolia cupcake and walk around Central Park.
These cupcakes live up to their reputation of deliciousness and they're right next to one of the most beautiful parts of the city.
8. Go to a museum.
Student prices at museums are rather cheap to begin with; however, the prices they provide are merely “suggested prices” so you can actually choose how much you pay for a ticket at places such as The Met or The Museum of Natural History.
9. Visit Washington Square Park.
It has a dog park. Enough said.
10. Go to Coney Island
Coney Island is a unique section of NYC, because it has a boardwalk and even a beach. Not to mention the section that has cool walls that provide plenty of photo-ops.
So, if you’re someone who dislikes New York for its image of ruthless corporations or crowds of tourists, or if you simply need suggestions for your next trip, try some of these activities and see why New York truly is one of the greatest cities the world.
