10 Films I'm Excited For This Year
Lit Cult

I am studying film at my college and I guess that means I really like movies. But, for some reason I hardly ever see new movies. Perhaps it's because I'm quite lazy, I have too many TV shows I'm trying to keep up with on Netflix, or because I don't make time. Nevertheless, I have decided that I should at least watch one new movie in theaters a month. I mean, I owe it to myself at the very least to keep up with the film industry so that I'm prepared when I make big as a Hollywood producer (what? I'm optimistic). Anyways, here are 10 films that I'm excited to see and may end up seeing more than once.

1. Finding Dory. Directed by Andrew Stanton and Angus MacLane.

So, this is here for obvious reasons. I have waited my whole life to see this movie! We welcome back the adorable-y amazing Dory as she embarks on an adventure to find her parents. She is accompanied by Merlin and Nemo and they find themselves at the Marine Life Institute. The only way to be reunited with her parents is to break them out. The movie features some returning favorites like Crush and Squirt with plenty of new friends! Check out the trailer http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2277860/ on IMDB. This movie is already in theaters.

2. The Secret Life of Pets.Directed by Chris Renaud and Yarrow Cheney.

If you haven't guessed from the title this movie focuses on what our pets do when we aren't home. It focuses on a terrier named Max who lives a spoiled and wonderful life until his owner adopts a huge and unruly dog named Duke. After an unfortunate encounter with alley cats, Max and Duke end up on a truck that's headed to the pound. Snowball, a rebellious bunny, saves them, and he demands the pair join his gang of abandoned pets on their mission to right the wrongs humans have done against them. From Illumination Entertainment, the company that brought you Despicable Me, I have really high hopes for this film. I just really love animated children's films because I'm nine years old by heart. Check out the trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZJVc_JTI_w. It will be in theaters July 8th.

3. Suicide Squad. Directed by David Ayer.

Okay. Let me just try to get myself together because I have been waiting for this movie for my entire life and oh, I cannot wait! Supervillians are asked to help with a secret government mission that will likely result in their deaths. They accept and they hope to survive for clemency. If I could just focus on the cast line-up for a second here. Jared freaking Leto as the Joker. Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn (my idol), Will Smith as Deadshot, Cara Delevigne as the Enchantress, you guys, please tell me you're as excited as I am! I can hardly breathe thinking about it! I would give anything to play a supervillian in a movie (or in life, maybe?) and I'm using it as inspiration. It will be in theaters August 5th. The trailer is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmRih_VtVAs. Definitely one of the best trailers ever done.

4. Kubo and the Two Strings. Directed by Travis Knight.

One of my favorite film studios is Laika. They have brought us ParaNorman, Coraline, and The Boxtrolls. It tells the story of young Kubo who accidentally awakens a vengeful spirit from the past. On the run, he teams up with Beetle and Monkey to unlock a secret legacy. Armed with a magical instrument, Kubo must battle monsters and gods, like the Moon King, to save his family and solve the mystery of his fallen father, the greatest samurai the world has ever known. Please just watch the trailer and you'll understand. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4-6qJzeb3A. In theaters August 19.

5. Southside With You. Directed by Richard Tanne.

This movie focuses on the first date Barack and Michelle Obama ever went on in the summer of 1989. It's just as romantic as it sounds. I would just like to take a moment and point out how handsome Parker Sawyers is. I want to simply say congratulations to his face. The actors do a really nice job in there roles, I mean, they look perfect! I'm excited to see the love story of the Obamas. Check out the trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erpUF2ToUls. In theaters August 26th.

6. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.Directed by Tim Burton.

I would really appreciate it if Tim (yeah, I call him Tim. We're cool like that) would just wait for me because he's doing all the movies I want to do. Anyway, this film is based off a children's book by Ransom Riggs and it tells the story of a boy named Jacob who discovers clues to a mystery that spans different places and times. This leads him to a place where children with special and peculiar powers reside under the care of Miss Peregrine. As Jacob learns more about the residents the mysteries and danger deepen. I really love fairy tales and children's stories that have an edge of creepiness to them. Also, it is a pool of Halloween inspiration! Check out the trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tV_IhWE4LP0. Look for the movie in theaters September 30th.

7. Doctor Strange.Directed by Scott Derrickson.

I don't know if it's obvious, but I'm kind of a nerd. I love superheroes and fairy tales and magic, so I think it's easy to see why I'd be interested in this movie. After his career is destroyed, an arrogant and brilliant man gets a new shot at life when a powerful sorceress takes him under her wing and trains him to defend the world from evil. Marvel is definitely making bank these days with movies lined up for the next three or four years. All I can say is keep them coming! They keep the little nerd in me fed and happy. Watch the trailer http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1211837/. See it in theaters November 4th.

8. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Directed by David Yates.

I think it is important to point out that this list is no way in order because if It was, you'd best believe this movie would be number one! I love the Wizarding world more than I could possible say. I've re-watched the Harry Potter movies more times than I can say (thanks to Freeform!), I've re-read the series, I've poured hours over Tumblr where people share fanfics, au stories, and thoughts on characters and scenes. When I was young, I had the book this movie is based on. It lists all of the magical creatures known to the wizard world and their Ministry classifications. I studied it, I took notes, and I dreamed of taking Care of Magical Creatures with Hagrid. Now that it's going to be a movie... Thank you! It tells the story about a magizoologist who must track down an array of magical creatures in 1926 New York. Oh, let me make something clear; 1926 New York. Do you know what that means? Wizards in America during the Jazz Age. Flappers, gangsters, hip language, GUYS! Will you join me November 18 to see this? Watch the magical trailer http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3183660/ on IMDB.

9. Moana. Directed by John Musker and Ron Clements.

I think Disney really fits the whole "I love fairy tales" statement, yeah? What better than the next Disney princess? This movie is about a young Pacific Islander named Moana who uses her navigational skills to venture out on a daring mission to save her people. She is joined by a once powerful demi-god and together they encounter giant monsters, impossible odds, and the chance to find one's identity. A couple of reasons to be excited; first, she's a Disney princess and she's not white. Second, she will definitely promote healthy body images with her strong legs and arms. Third, it deals with mythology from the Pacific Islands and that is like candy to me! Fourth, Hamilton's Lin-Manuel Miranda has written music for it, so, yeah. I'm there. Check out the teaser trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FG5K0_i9ZFA. The movie will be in theaters November 23.

10. The Girl on the Train. Directed by Tate Taylor.

This movie comes out in the season of horror films and I'm pretty sure it's going to be the only one I can handle! I enjoy mysteries and thrillers, so this is perfect. It tells the story of a woman who rides the same train to and from work everyday and everyday it passes by her old house where her ex-husband still lives with his new wife and child. A couple houses down a couple named Megan and Scott Hipwell and she watches them and creates a dream life for them as she attempts to forget her pain. One day she sees something that makes her furious and the next day she wakes up with bruises, wounds, and no memory of the previous day. All she knows now is that Megan Hipwell has gone missing. She becomes invested with the case, determined to find out exactly what happened. This movie is based off the book of the same name by Paula Hawkins. Check out the trailer http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3631112/?ref_=cs_ov_tt. Coming to theaters October 7th.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
