There’s nothing more exciting than coming back to school after a long break back at home. With a new semester comes a whole lot of excitement, surprises, and new beginnings.
1. New classes
I like to think that syllabus week resets my GPA. All of the stresses of last semester’s classes are in the past. No longer will I agonize over each measly little point that separates me from two letter grades. I can build new relationships with my professors and start off in their good graces. There’s nothing better than a fresh start.
2. No homework
Syllabus week means lectures end early, discussions are often canceled, and the workload is limited. Midterms and finals seem like light-years away and procrastination is acceptable at this point. No homework means more free time to do absolutely nothing – every college kid’s dream
3. Out with the old, in with the new
Remember that student that sat next to you who always ate a bacon-egg-and cheese, having no regard for the oil and crumbs spilling everywhere? Or the girl who came straight from the gym, still sweaty and smelly? Do you remember that know-it-all student that raised his hand so often the professor had to try not to call on him? Well say goodbye to the ghosts of your past. New classmates offer opportunities to make new friends, initiate study groups, and a newfound hope for no annoying, messy, or smelly students.
4. Reuniting with friends
What’s more exciting than seeing old friends after weeks away at home? The best part about syllabus week is catching up over a meal, hearing all about vacations, home friends and how our school doesn’t even compare to theirs, and most likely an uncomfortable story about someone running into an ex from high school. It’s almost like we never left.
5. Nights out
With classes being an absolute joke, every night is a night out. The hype is real and morale for an excellent night is high. It’s almost as if everything is new again: each frat, bar, and club is as thrilling as the first time you went. At the end of the semester, people will still be saying, remember that time during syllabus week? (nope)
6. New school supplies
If you’re OCD like I am, this is one of the best parts of the week. A fresh notebook with the edges still in tact, new pens and pencils, and a clean backpack. What else does one really need?
7. Promise for the semester
The start of each semester has great potential. Sylly week involves setting goals (that probably won’t be fulfilled), including but not limited to going to the gym, not procrastinating, keeping your room clean, finally figuring out what the hell you’re going to do this summer, and an endless list of other tasks that will make you feel like a real person. It’s almost a clean slate.
8. Exploring
Without homework, studying, or other time commitments that the semester brings, there are so many opportunities to explore campus. Whether it’s trying a new restaurant or doing an adventurous activity, syllabus week is the perfect time to cross things off your bucket list.
9. Dropping classes with no repercussion
The nice thing about syllabus week is that you don’t have to have it all figured out. You can enroll in whatever classes you want and then decide if you want to take them or not. Syllabus week gives you a sneak peek of what is to come and gives you a free pass to test out a few classes.
10. The realization that you get to spend the next 4 months here
Time moves so fast and before you know it, you’re throwing your graduation cap up in the air, only left with “remember whens.” Syllabus week makes you realize how fortunate you are to be at such a place with such people. It explains why you shouldn’t wish the days away and take advantage of each moment of college. These are your best years, so use your time wisely.
