1. All-Nighters
There is never enough time during the day to get that essay done without pulling an all-nighter. If there hasn’t been already, there will be at least one time in your life when procrastination will set in, the clock will turn 6 a.m. and you’ll look in the mirror to find a goblin. As a matter of fact if you can make it a year without pulling an all-nighter then I’d probably throw water at you to see if you short circuit.
2. Binge Drinking
There will be a crossroads in your college career where you can either win that Beer Pong title or stick to the sidelines. Among the many college experiences, binge drinking is one of the most stereotypical and probably one of the more detrimental. Having that nice glass of wine at a family dinner won’t quite feel the same after you downed a whole bottle at a pregame. As long as you’re responsible when you drink and don’t wake up in a pool of your own vomit this bad habit can be managed and should be.
3. Napping Excessively
It’s one thing to take a nap in that hour between classes, but when you find yourself closing your eyes at 4 p.m. only to find that you missed dinner when they open you have a problem. Napping in college is absolutely essential if you plan on coming out sane after those late nights but restricting naps to an hour or two is probably best to avoid missing classes, meals, friends, and move out day.
4. Declining Activity
Finding the time to get to the gym or even just out is hard when you’re balancing classes, a job, a few clubs, social interaction, and, my personal favorite, lazy time. Sure walking to classes and climbing those grueling staircases is exercise but that’s like saying those bagels in the dining hall are real bagels. If you really want to avoid that Freshmen Fifteen or, at this point, lose it then grab some friends and hit the gym or even join an intramural sport.
5. Excessive Snacking
Snacks are a necessity to have in your room for those days when you just need a boost, but you’ll probably regret having it after you realize you ate a whole bag of Doritos in five minutes. There are also some days when you can’t sleep at night with you stomach growling because you ate an egg sandwich at 1 a.m. everyday the past week.
6. Excessive Caffeine/Sugar
Just like snacking, coffee is one of your best friends in college and pretty much the rest of your life. Those all-nighters wouldn’t be possible with those five cups of coffee or red bull. Coffee breath will require a gas mask to escape when it comes to the college atmosphere so I’d start searching for one now.
7. Lack Of Concern For Anything
Nothing sucks the life out of you quite like a college class load. School work slowly sucks the enthusiasm for anything in your life, and before you know it you’re spending you free time drooling on the couch. At some point people become irrelevant, speaking becomes bothersome, and your soul just starts crumpling. You can’t even explain what exactly is going on, but slowly everything just starts to become meaningless.
8. Bad Hygiene
Once you realize that showers are no longer a priority in your life the transformation begins. Hair starts to grow uncontrollably, people begin to recognize you by scent, and then when you finally take a moment to look in the mirror you realize you’re about a day away from looking like a caveman. I mean it’s only thing to grow a beard and another to start feeding worms to the family of birds that have begin taking residence below you chin.
9. Disregard For Fashion
Back in high school you probably spent at least five minutes if not more picking out what you needed to wear to look appropriate for school. In college, you probably grab that pair of sweat pants you’ve been using all week and run to class before it starts. I mean after you’ve hit the dining hall in you’re pajamas, hair sticking up and people see you wearing your glasses for the first time there isn’t much lower you can go.
10. Social Media Dependence
Probably a fourth of the college experience happens on Facebook. Parties, performances, and James Franco sightings all happen online and you can’t help but keep Facebook open on your phone. You look at everyone pictures online and think about what you're doing with your life. Posting on Overheard has pretty much become a rite of passage, going through party pictures on Facebook has become a favorite past time, and stalking people online has become a guilty pleasure. Honestly, if you didn’t go on social media you would probably get you’re work done five hours before the deadline instead of two minutes before its due.
