If you’re from Iowa, you always will encounter people from of other parts of the United States and the world who know absolutely nothing about the state. While some of these questions can be funny at first, after a while they just get annoying. We are genuinely kind people and we have a lot of patience for most things, but when you hear the same questions over and over, it can wear us down. Iowa may be off the grid for most, but it is definitely not a bad place to live and raise a family.
1. Isn’t that where the potato is from?
This is one of the more common questions I have gotten, and honestly I don’t know how to answer it without being rude. Iowa is known for corn, and the state you’re referring to is Idaho, which is nowhere near Iowa, but it’s okay we’ll forgive you.
2. Where is that?
Well, you see Iowa is almost smack dab in the middle of the country in the Midwest.. We are known for being genuinely kind people, but it hurts a little that you can’t look at a map of the United States before you ask us that question.
3. What do you do there?
Well you see, there is a lot of farming , and we go to school, we go to fairs in the summertime, bonfires, boating in the rivers, basically a lot of the things the other states do too.
4. What else is there besides corn?
Well, we have corn, soybeans, cows, pigs… someones got to feed this country right? Again, we have many of the things other states have in our bigger cities.
5. Aren’t you all farmers?
No.. no we aren’t. many of us live in cities and other smaller communities and do not have anything to do with farming.
6. Ragbrai???
It’s an annual race that the state of Iowa has where participants bike across the entire state for 10 days, making stops throughout the state. The whole state gets involved and it's one of the biggest events of the year.
To conclude, Iowa is a state that is not usually talked about by people from other states. It is a state full of kind people who welcome visitors with wide open arms. There are many great things that Iowa has to offer and it is a great place to raise a family. When we hear these questions asked by others we answer respectfully and try to educate about our state. This article was to just share a good laugh with everyone who can relate.
