Your New York 2016 Summer Festival Guide

I know, I know–it’s the end of April and here in New York state we’re still getting overly excited when the temperature goes above 60° because that means we’re on our way to festival time. Here on the east coast we’re currently envious of Coachella simply because warm weather, music, and good vibes. Fear not my friends, I’ve compiled a list of must-go music festivals in New York this summer so you can start saving up now or buy early passes at lower prices!

In date order:

1. Governors Ball (June 3-5)

This is probably one of the best ways to kick off your summer! With a large crowd drawn in from all over New York and elsewhere, this event allows you to experience the city in such a fun way by being at the center of three boroughs – Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. This year's artists range from Matt and Kim, to Mac Miller and Kanye West!

2. Summer Jam (June 5)

Although this is just a one-day affair and just barely across state lines into New Jersey, this event was made for people who appreciate the new styles of rap that have been emerging into the scene the last few years. This event will give you the opportunity to see the one and only Major Key, DJ Khaled, Chance the Rapper, and A$AP Rocky, among several other artists!

3. Mysteryland USA (June 10-13)

If you want an all inclusive music experience this is definitely it! Not only can you listen to artists like Skrillex or The Chainsmokers, but you also can head over to the silent disco area or even take a mental health break with yoga lessons!

4. Saratoga Jazz Festival (June 25-26)

I’m probably biased towards this since my parents have been taking me since my toddler days, but this festival draws in some of the biggest names in jazz. People hang out in picnic style out on the general admission lawn and listen to artists such as Chaka Khan and Smokey Robinson who will both be attending this year!

5. Osheaga (July 29-July 31)

A bit of a stretch for some New Yorkers to get up to Montreal but if you’re from upstate New York I definitely would! Last year, I happened to be in Montreal at the same time without realizing and met some of the best festival goers, after all Canada is known for its friendly people. This year's top headliners include Lana Del Ray, Bastille and the Red Hot Chili Peppers! Unfortunately, August is lacking in the festival department, but it’s too hot anyways so enjoy this month in the water!

6. Electric Zoo (September 2-4)

You may be back to school but at this point in the year your workload

shouldn’t be difficult so you can afford this study break. As a way to cap off the fun of your summer you can enjoy the warmth and jam out to the three-day EDM rave!

Have fun giving up your wallet this summer in the name of music!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
