The people of the world have always had a wide variety of pets. From fish, to lizards, to hamsters, to cats and more, pretty much any animal one can domesticate has been someone’s pet. But, one animal stands out from the rest. They are loyal, friendly, and known as a “man’s (or woman’s) best friend.” This pet is a dog.
There has never been a time in my life when I did not have a dog. Before I was even born my parents owned a dog. So, you could say that I am biased about dogs being the best pets, but I do not believe I am. I have interacted with other people’s pets that were not dogs, and it’s just not the same. But dogs, no matter what gender, are the best. They soft and cute, playful and fun, and are a part of your family.
You may even consider your dog to be your brother or sister, and take pride in that. Maybe they’ve even been on the family Christmas card a few times! (I know that mine have!) Dogs are some of the best animals in the world, even when compared to animals that are not domesticated, such as the famous “king of the jungle,” also known as a lion.
A dog will always be loyal to you. As long as they live, you are their god. Their life revolves around you and nothing else (well maybe food too, but most importantly you!). They’ll always be by your side through all the ups and downs, and belief it or not, they know when your mood changes. When you’re happy, they can sense it, and they get happy too. They’ll bark, pant, jump up and down… anything to show that they’re just as happy as their person! Yes, you are your dog’s person, never doubt that! When you’re sad, they know too. You could be slumped on the couch, tears in your eyes, and your dog will come over to you and give you a kiss (a lick). Instantly, that will brighten your spirits.
In a way, they’re like your therapist. They sit and listen to you until you’re done talking. You could vent for hours and hours while they sit next to you on the bed, and just listen. Sometimes the people in your life don’t even take the time to listen to you, but your dog always will. Dogs can help relieve your stress and clear your mind. Getting things off of your chest is good for you, and your dog is the perfect listener.
And have you ever seen how excited your dog gets when you come home? Whether it be from a long day at school or work, a day trip to the beach, or for fifteen minutes while you ran out to get milk, your dog loses its marbles the second you come home. Their eyes light up, their tails starts to wag at one hundred miles per hour, and they look like they are grinning from ear to ear. It feels so good knowing that someone out there misses you so much! Your dog is your number one fan.
You’ll never have a better friend than your dog. They possess all of the qualities that make up a good friend, and then some. Their warm nature alone makes them such great pets. They cherish you just as much as you cherish them, and probably more. Your dog is not just a pet, but a friend, a family member, and a loyal partner. If one gets the magnificent privilege of being able to call a dog their own, it is something not to take advantage of. It is a gift. Your dog is a gift, in the same sense that you are a gift to your dog. They will never take you for granted, as you should never do that to them.
Personally, life would be a lot more lonely without my two dogs in my life. They are my sisters, my friends, my girls. They listen to my problems, offer me affection when need be, and are always over-the-moon happy to see me. My dogs warm my heart and I hope I warm theirs. I love my dogs, and I love all dogs. There really is no competition in this matter; dogs are the best and that is final.
