Life is scary. One minute, everything in your life is going great. You have your life together, your friends are amazing and make you super happy, and your grades are…decent. What can go wrong right?
The next minute, something happens. Something minor normally though. You get in a fight with your best friend and you stop speaking for a couple of days. Or you catch a cold so you’re mopey and tired. Maybe you even get a D on that quiz you studied for for so long. But that is the worst that can happen. Because you’re invincible right?
Nope.
You’re not.
You are NOT invincible.
That is the harsh reality. Everyone watches those commercials with the warnings and the bad things happening. Car crashes from drunk driving, people in hospitals warning against drinking too much. Tobacco use, sexual harassment, abuse in relationships or family abuse. We see all of these daily but say “It’s just a commercial, it can’t happen to me.”
We watch the news. We see these things happen in real life. We see real people, making real mistakes or wrong decisions. The college student accidentally overdosed and is in critical condition. Someone innocently driving was hit by another vehicle operated by a drunk driver. We see all of these and think “That is so sad. I am thankful that isn’t me. It will never be me because it can’t happen to me. I am not like that.”
You are NOT invincible. All of this happens to real people. Innocently seeming people. People who are just having fun with friends hanging out drinking, on a normal Friday night. This is real life. It can happen to you. It can happen to your friend the way it happened to mine. She can wind up in the hospital with a heart rate of 170, with blood being taken hooked up to an IV from 1:30 AM until 6:00 AM. It can happen to anyone. You are not invincible.
Remember this during this upcoming holiday season. If you are drinking at that ugly sweater party all night long, call an uber or a sober friend to pick you up. If you want to just try that drug your friends use all of the time, just once, don’t do it. This is the most wonderful time of the year. Don’t spend it in a hospital bed, or hovered over your friend. Notice the warning signs. Help others out. Enjoy your time the right way.
You are not invincible. You are human.
