As a child, it was my biggest dream to have a dog. All I ever wanted was a dog. I wanted a long-term companion who I could cuddle and play with who was all-around adorable. In April of 2008, my family and I adopted a little 8 month Yorkshire terrier who means the world to me. However, she totally shattered my expectations of how I thought owning a dog would be like (and I mean that in a good way). I have noticed Yorkies are very independent and unique, but here are a few reasons on how they can really stand out from other dogs.
1. They Love To Stare . . . A Lot
Literally, they will watch your every move. I can barely go from one room to the next without my dog making me uncomfortable by staring at me as if I stole something from her. And my dad hates it when she constantly “eyeballs” him (his wording for it). They’re just so naturally curious that they always want to know what you’re doing, are constantly trying to figure you out and want to know what you’re thinking.
2. They Think They’re Bigger Than They Really Are
I have always heard of this, but it never really struck me until my 5 pound Yorkie went head-to-head with a Great Dane . . . and won. They have some sort of fire in them that just makes them want to be heard at all times and nothing is going to stop them from doing so (except for some easy training). However their bark isn’t just bigger than their bite; they will prove themselves as formidable. They are always looking for trouble and like to be in charge when given the chance. It’s that independent spirit in them that craves some power, though you’re more likely to find them adorable than threatening.
3. One of The Best Watch Dogs
When something in your atmosphere is a bit out of the ordinary, a Yorkie will let you know. Other than the fact that they’re sometimes too small to be viewed as scary, they are loud and proud and will let you know when something happens or when something is off. They will also let you know when a person is a bit “off” since dogs are great judges of character. Though the barking can be a bit much if not trained to suppress it, it’s a great thing for a dog to be very watchful of their environment in order to keep you safe.
4. They’re Either a Loving Show Dog or a Cheerful Playmate
Now this is all depends on the household they’re raised in. In my case, my Yorkie is as independent and rough as she is adorable. She loves to play, bark and roll around in the dirt. However, I’ve seen other Yorkies groomed to perfection and obediently trained as if they were a show dog. It is also true that if you spoil them, no matter how cute they are, they will become loud and snappish so it’s best not to do that (unless you want a loud dog that seemingly hates everything).
5. They Always Want to be With You
This is something that definitely drew me towards this dog. If they sleep in the bed with you, they will cuddle right under you. They don’t like being away from you for long periods of time and can easily develop separation anxiety. And for those who are allergic to dogs and don’t want them that close, they’re hypoallergenic since they have hair instead of fur so this is definitely a dog to consider if you want one. They just love to entertain, be loved and definitely give love.
Yorkshire terriers are the 2nd most popular breed in the world and they really do have a way of sneaking into your heart. Whether you like small dogs or not, they have a vivacious spirit you can’t help but enjoy. They’re eager to please and are very interested in their owner so training at an early age is not an issue. They’re all around fun and just want to be by your side no matter what. They are always looking out for you and will definitely bark loud enough to inform you of any danger. I never knew how interesting and how much character a dog could have until I got one and I am so glad she is in my life.
