What My Sorority Taught Me

What My Sorority Taught Me

If you live in America, I am sure you have seen at least one or more movies involving sororities. They all show sororities as dumb, rich and party girls. I’m not going to lie, I too thought this was exactly how all sororities were. This is why when it was time for me to go to college, I was very hesitant to join a sorority. My older sister was in a sorority at the university I was going to and encouraged me to go through recruitment because she loved her sorority. I decided to give it a chance, and I am forever grateful I did. Here are a few lessons I’ve learned from my amazing sisters!

Your dreams aren’t so far fetched.

All throughout high school, I believed that there was no way I would be able to get into a good college with my grades. I believed that there was no way I could be a teacher. Once I joined my sorority though, all of these doubts went away. I met so many incredible and driven women. These ladies are always pushing me to do my best because they know I can be successful. They made me realize that I can achieve anything I set my mind to.

Your sisters are your biggest supporters.

It sounds extremely cheesy, but I know that whether it’s a job interview, or getting a good grade on a test, my sisters will be there to cheer me on. They have been there for me through some of my biggest triumphs in my life. They have also been there for me through some of my biggest sorrows. They are there all of the time, no questions asked, and no judgments given.

Time with sisters is precious.

My first year in college was also my first year in my sorority. There was a lot of new things going on at the time and I didn’t want to go to sisterhoods or date nights. That is something I will always regret. This is where you get to know sisters and build friendships. I realized my mistake after the seniors went alum. I realized I never really got to know any of them and now they were leaving for the real world. Don’t ever give up an opportunity to hang out with sisters/friends.

Sororities are nothing like the movies.

My sisters are honestly some of the nicest, smartest and most driven women I have ever met. Greek life strives to overcome these stereotypes. We have some of the highest GPAs on campus, we raise thousands of dollars for our philanthropy and we aren’t our stereotypes.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
