Why do I write? I have never asked myself this question. I believe it is because I have never spoken up. Most people, even my closest family and friends, don’t know how in-depth I can go with an issue. I write about things that have great meaning to me. Sometimes I write about worldly issues that may have ten million different opinions. It can be something as simple as a color to a more physiological aspect of life, for example why a person would do a certain thing. Usually I don’t voice my opinions on the matter, I just go along with what others say or give a simple version of my opinion. When I first started writing, it was about very complex things. While watching the news one day I saw a report about the argument going on about a certain topic during a presidential debate and decided to write what I would say had I the ability to speak to the candidate.
Writing has been a way for me to express myself in ways that I normally wouldn’t. I can write anything I want. There isn’t anyone there to criticize me or influence my opinion in any way. It’s just me. After a time I began to write things that I know most people would consider “lame” or “stupid.” It didn’t make any difference to me, I still wrote it. Writing had helped me to see who I can truly be and who I am. It made me see that even though I hide my deeper views of certain aspects that I am no different than other people. It helped me to see that I am not the only one who thinks that way. This is mainly because after reading my writing back to myself I looked up other writings by famous authors that similar topics as the ones I wrote of. Writing helped me to see who I am and to see the many different views of the world in a greater way than just my perspective.
I enjoy writing and choosing topics that may seem very odd for me to be discussing. I can pick the most random topic to write about in as many or as few details as I want. I have switched between the types of writing that I do each year. I had a period where I wrote poems, stories, and times where I wrote nonsense. No really, what was I writing about those days?
Everyone has the ability to write. You don’t have to be “good” at it. If you enjoy it and it makes you feel good, then write. It doesn’t have to be about some serious topic, it can be about the cat chasing the dog down the street. If you love what you don’t, most opinions won't matter. Just go for it and express yourself. You can keep your written pieces to yourself, what matters is that you do what you love and you feel good doing it.
