Why I Write For Odyssey

Writing for Odyssey has opened up a world of creative writing for me, but I also wish this site was taken more seriously.

I've been writing for Odyssey for a little bit more than a year now-- mostly writing about political issues, personal issues, and just-for-fun topics. It's a site that I enjoy writing on, and have big ideas and plans of what topics I want to go into. But to be honest, writing for Odyssey (and pretty much any other journalism organization) is hard. And maybe it's like that for me because I enjoy writing topics that appeal to me, not a list of dessert ideas for Valentine's day-- a topic that I legit wrote about around 2 weeks ago. But sometimes, that is what it comes to, writing articles that are primarily composed of GIFs and pictures.

Don't get me wrong, listicles and GIF related articles are great and I love that Odyssey gives a platform to writers to make this kind of content. But I also wish that Odyssey branched out more, to the point of becoming a sophisticated news/op-ed organization.

Look at Buzzfeed, the inventors of listicles, but who also have a news department that has quite a bit of Pulitzer awards to their name. I think Odyssey has the potential to become just that, still an online organization with listicle, more fun op-ed like pieces, but also covering news and allowing a more investigative journalism approach.

So going back to why I write here. Take a peek at my profile and you can probably tell that I'm into politics. Look at the more popular posts on Odyssey right now though and it's usually listicles, most likely featuring memes and rankings throughout-- which is not a bad thing! But if a politically strung article is ever featured on this spot, it would probably be with radical right ideas that you hope is only popular because so many people are surprised someone would actually say this (but probably isn't the case). I joined Odyssey so I can write on whatever I wish and have that creative freedom that is rarely seen in newspapers. But I also wish that news related articles were taken more seriously on this site and not just the listicle articles that take ten minutes.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Whether you met your new love interest online, through mutual friends, or another way entirely, you'll definitely want to know what you're getting into. Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
