I love being a writer. I especially love being one of the Contributing Editors at The Odyssey as you have complete creative power. I can write about something funny, something sad, something serious, stupid, can write literally whatever I want without crossing any boarders because at The Odyssey we don’t have boarders…or unnecessary walls that we want someone else to pay for, but that’s beside the point! So, with all this power, wouldn’t you think that coming up with an idea with an article is easy? NOPE! I have what every writer faces more often than not, the most painful disorder, syndrome, disease there is: Writer’s Block.
Stick with me here on this one. Imagine sitting at your desk. There you are, hands over the keys, Word or Pages open, ambitious to write. You take a deep breath, begin to type but your fingers don’t move. SHIT! You have nothing to write about. How do you have nothing to write about? So much has happened this week from the crazy Heroin overdose pics to our girl Hillary leaving the September 11th ceremony early and almost face planting. Trump released his health records to everyone’s go to health professional Dr. Oz. In Columbus, Ohio, cops shot a 13-year old. Don’t you want to right about one of these big news stories? Nah.
So you sit there roaming the internet, checking various news outlets for what seem to be bizarre or interesting stories. You find one you like, write a line, then realize it’s way too similar to the original article. You want to find something no one has written about, something out of this mind. You can’t. maybe a hard news story like the North Korean military conducting their fifth nuclear bomb test. But would that really get shares? Would people care almost a week later? Probably not.
Now you’re sitting there, aggravated, not knowing what to do. So…why don’t you FaceTime someone? You have a ton of time until the deadline! You FaceTime, tell your friends your struggle. They laugh, you laugh, a nervous one, and then get distracted. Every thought you had about being nervous for this article is completely gone until you see the internet opened to the news story on your computer. Now what? You literally gave your writers a list of ideas, and you seriously can’t choose one to right? You have no word limit, you can write a freaking 20-word poem. Come on! What’s wrong with you.
Now, go back into your own shoes. You see what it’s like to be me right now. What do I do? How can I come up with an idea? Why am I having this? Because I’m normal. Because as a writer there actually is so much to write about, but I’m so ambitious to write everything that I can’t get your thoughts together. I can’t get my thoughts together about once certain thing that I’m now lost, yet I still managed to pull something together. I’ll collect my thoughts, I’ll write about something crazy next week, trust me. But for this week, I’m going to have to accept the fact that writer’s block took over.
