Let’s be honest. This election has been anything but promising. It’s been compared to a horrible game of “Would You Rather,” and I’ve got to admit, that’s about as accurate as you can be.
It's not crazy to begin to panic about the future of America every time you turn on the news or log onto Facebook and see the latest bit of information that's been dug up about the candidates. It's all very nerve-wracking, and to be honest, it's a big deal. Every election is more important than the last. It's the election that's going to take us from where we are now, to hopefully where we want to be in the future.
But therein lies the problem.
With each day it has seemed that regardless of your political party or "usual" voting habits, the choice is a tough one to make. You hate one, but you also don't like the other....You just maybe hate them a little bit less.
Also, let's face it, we are constantly being surrounded by speeches, accusations, polls, and TV ads that make you want to throw your flatscreen straight off the roof.
All of this has been on my mind a lot recently, because this is my first election that I've actually been allowed to vote it.
I noticed that I was becoming annoyed that this..out of all the elections that this country has held..This election that has become corrupted by Twitter wars and memes is the election I've been given to share my voice with for the first time.
I also know that I'm not alone in feeling this.
Last week the visiting pastor at my church said something that immediately struck me. He said,
"No matter who gets in the office, God is on the throne."
I rushed to write these words down because I knew that they had answered a fear I had been unknowingly carrying around. But here's the truth---Donald Trump could win. Hillary Clinton could win. Gary Johnson could win. Honestly, the whole system could come crumbling down and leave us with no "President of the United States." But regardless of who is sworn into that oval office on January 20, they will place their hand on a book that was written by the true leader of the people of not just this country, but of every continent and island on this Earth.
They will have earthly power, but there is a much higher and greater power that no matter how much money they invest into their campaigns they will never be able to gain.
To me this is comforting. Because while I believe with my whole heart that voting is an important task that we are called to do, it's also reassuring to know that regardless of who wins the ballots, we have a Savior who has already won the biggest battle we actually face.
So be responsible this election season. Educate yourself on your nominees. Pray that God will allow whoever is chosen to seek Him first.
And at the end of the day rest in knowing that no matter who gets in that office, God is still on the throne.
