Would You Date Yourself?

Instead of looking for “the one,” work on becoming, “the one.”

Would You Date Yourself?
Julianna Luton

All too often, as I check my social media, I see the same depressing posts from people about how, “They aren’t enough,” “They aren’t valued,” and, “Someday, someone will love them.” I come across these phrases and countless others on a daily basis, and honestly, I can’t think of many things that sadden me more than someone thinking they have to wait around for that “someone” who might come “someday” in order for them to feel like they're worth something.

Has it ever occurred to you that you do not need a partner to value you? Do you ever think about how life isn’t all about finding a special someone to fall in love with? Obviously, I know that having a significant other is a blessing and that it’s nice to have someone to talk to, hang out with, and love you at all times, but why do people let this desire consume their every thought? If you sit around waiting for love to come, it might not ever happen. If you spend your time trying to find “the one,” you might as well break your own heart because there’s always a chance that they’ll never step into your life.

Here’s a slice of harsh reality: Not everyone is meant to live the married life. There are people that lived and died without ever falling in love and without finding “the one.” After knowing this, think about it from this perspective: If you spend your time and energy stressing over finding love and it never comes, you ended up wasting your life away. Love is a precious gift that not everybody gets the pleasure of receiving. Not everyone gets to fall in love, so why stress about something that might not ever happen? There are people who spend their whole lives searching for the love of their life, and unfortunately, they don't always find what they're looking for.

Life is about discovering your passion and igniting its flame. It’s about doing what you love and loving what you do. Life is about finding happiness in the little things, yet loving when the big things happen. It’s about stargazing, adventures, and petting every cute dog you come across. It’s about impacting lives, loving the universe, and believing in yourself. It’s about seeing how many chicken nuggets you can eat in one setting, building a foundation, and serving others. Life is about the journey, not the destination. It’s about creating your own pathway versus strolling down someone else’s in hopes that they’ll take you along with them. Life is about becoming the ultimate you that you can possibly become and reaching your full potential.

Stop waiting for that “someone.” Realize who you are and what you’re made of. Come to the realization that you do not need another individual to tell you who you are and what you have to offer this world. You don’t need someone to tell you you’re smart, attractive, or one of a kind. You don’t need good morning text messages or, “No, I love you more!” wars. You don’t need someone to want you. Personally, I don't know if love will ever find me. If it does, I will be the happiest woman in the world, but if it doesn't, I will still be the happiest woman in the world.

Instead, think about who you are. Would you date yourself? Are you the best you you can be? Work on yourself, create yourself, and inevitably, love yourself. You have the power to mold your existence into whatever you want it to be. Instead of looking for “the one,” work on becoming, “the one.” Become the person everybody wants to be around. Become the person who radiates positive energy and welcoming vibes. Become the person who makes everyone feel at home. Become the person who practices what they preach and remains genuine at all times. Become the person who does all things with great love and puts their heart and soul into everything they do. Become the person who believes that kindness matters. Become the person who obtains an irreplaceable mindset and a gnarly personality. Become the person who you'd want to be with for the rest of your life and maybe, if you’re one of the lucky ones, love will find you and “the one” will walk down the aisle and say, “I do.”

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
